Wildlife--in MY backyard!

Carolina on My Blog - Tue, June 24 2008

Okay now, I like to think of myself as enlightened and accepting, but a girl's gotta have her space. I've come to terms with having to share the trees with the squirrels. I mean, they can have the trees as long as they stay off the fence and the grass.

This summer I've seen all kinds of critters:
Chipmunks; now those are fun to chase.
Ducks; why are they doing in my yard?! There's nothing duck-friendly in my yard.
Bunnies; they nibble on mom's flowers, and they are really good for chasing--no escaping up a tree, but they have emergency exits in my fence somewhere, .
Deer; we're in the suburbs for gosh sakes--guess they didn't get the memo!

And last night, I discovered RACCOONS! We heard all kinds of rustling and twigs snapping in the far corner of the yard. Turns out there were 4 baby raccoons climbing around in the trees. One of our trees has these big fat blackberry-like fruit and they were climbing around and eating all the berries. I whined to let me at them, but mom said to leave them. Party pooper.

What's next? The Tasmanian Devil? I suppose Mom will want me to leave them alone, too.

Have you see a possum?! Those things are as big a me! Creepy things.

Oh Carolina, can I come over to your house? I love chasing stuff. We have something underneath our shed and I'm always back there digging for it but it won't come out. What fun is that?

We only have chipmunks, squirrels, birds (including a Cooper's hawk sometimes), and possums. We live near downtown, and those possums are thick. I've killed one and winged another.

Oooh, possums, I don't think I have...hmmm, are they like squirrels or cats?

Oh yes! Come on over! There's plenty of critters to go around! But just so you know, if it looks like you might actually get one, my mom will probably have a heart attack.

Heck no! Neither a cat or squirrel! More like a HUGE rat with a monster set of teeth and a bad attitude. They're as big as me!

Well, maybe your mom could leave us out in the back yard and she could go to the store. I mean, if she's not there, it won't bother her, right?

Carolina, tell your mom that I totally understand. I don't think I'd know what to do if Francie or Penny actually managed to snag something. I'd probably pass out or cry or something.

It beats having cows in your yard...those things are HUGE and they talk back to you.
