A lot of commercial hairball remedies are petroleum-based (Petromalt, for example) so vasaline shouldn't be any worse than that. I recently got a new one for the kitties at Petsmart that was soy-based. At least it comes from a food product, not fossil fuel. Seems a little more natural, and the kitties liked it.
Hairballs are usually from ingestion of too much hair- excessive grooming, or excessive shedding. Diet may play a big role. My cats were on a hairball food, but allergic to some of the ingredients and therfore shedding too much. On a better quality, not hairball-control, and doing great. If on Hills C/D, can use Z/D for urine and skin.
