IP charity plant swap

Lynn on Activities - Thu, June 19 2008

I'll never be called quick. And I know it's a little late in the planting season but we could really do some good with this. I say that we have the first annual IP Charity plant swap. We charge a minimum $5 per head donation. All participants bring seedlings, cuttings, seeds or just something you've been meaning to thin out to trade. And for those who want to attend but have none of the above mentioned items bring a jug of lemonade or a plate of cookies to share. The idea is to make new friends, learn about new plants, benefit a good cause and have a good time. Please don't spend money on something to bring. After all the plants have been traded all those in attendance will have a majority rules vote on what charity 100% of the proceeds go to. I was thinking Red Cross - care of flood victims, IACC, etc. I'd love to hear from all that are interested. Suggestions for date, time, locations will be greatly appreciated. Lynn

What a great idea! I love meeting new IP peeps and have some stuff I can dig up and divide. It will likely be a little messy, though, so maybe a restaurant would not be a good idea. How about one of the local parks?

I would love to meet other IP members. I dont have any plants to share but i would gladly bring some snacks for both us and our babies(pets). Just let me know when and where.

Great idea. I think a park is a good place to hold this event. Sounds fun.

We planted a golden raspberry bush maybe 5 years ago and have several 1 year old starts. I also have catnip seedlings. As my inmates are completely addicted we don't need 30+ nip plants on hand. I agree about a park setting. Since we are all over town maybe something downtown would work. I don't know if any of the parks downtown have shelters. I was thinking maybe a Saturday early eveing. I know many folks are involved in adoption events on Sat. mornings. Plant parties like this are messy so dress accordingly. Sadly, I can already say that I won't be bringing hoghead. I'll have my hands full lugging in all my plants, let alone trying to keep Mr. 4-wheel drive under control. As soon as he'd spot someone he thinks will love on him he wants to switch into 4 wheel mode.

Drat, I dug up and threw away a ton of English Ivy that was taking over my yard. I do have daylillies that need dividing, but they are beginning to bloom right now. Is it a bad time to dig 'em up?

Excellent idea. Garfield Park is nice and it's not too far from downtown, off Shelby Street.

Lynn, I like your idea of an early Saturday evening. Garfield Park does look nice and it has a garden. So, that would fit with the theme! Pick a date!

I haven't been to Garfield in years. I don't know if we'd have to rent a shelter or pay some sort of fee to hold our gathering there? If that's not the case then let's say tentatively 6-29-08 at 4:30pm. Tentatively, becuase I'm scheduled to work that night but am going to see if I can switch with a co-worker that night.

6/29 is a Sunday. I have an event in Wanamaker until 4PM, then will need to pack up and get home to unload, pack my plants and get to GP. That probably won't work for me. But I think Saturday 6/28 would be okay.

If everyone likes this idea then we can plan it around May 1st next year. That way it's early enough in the planting season.

I can come on that Saturday!

I'll draft a letter briefly explaining who we are and why we're donating the proceeds for all in attendance to sign. I will promptly take our donation to my bank on Monday morning and have it converted into a cashiers check addressed to our choosen cause.
