Stupid question(s)

Judi on Health - Thu, June 19 2008

ok, this is the SECOND TIME I am trying to post this question. *sigh*

Do dogs & people react the same way (i.e. excessive trips to bathroom) to food poisoning? And do the same germs trigger fp in dogs that trigger it in humans?

No, we're not sick at Casa de Charlie but with all this salmonella and tomato-link talk, I am just curious about the subject. Sure, I know that if Charlie gets sick multiple times in one day, I need to take him to get some sub-cutaneous fluids, but that's not necessarily the result of food poisoning.

I know these are stupid questions but I had to ask....

Hi Judi! Yes, this site pretty much s#$%@s right now, with all the problems and obviously no one cares.
As for the food poisoning, here's a link. http://www.doctordog.com/dogbook/dogpoison.html
Dogs are notorious garbage-eaters (and my dog...deer poop!), so you know they have pretty iron stomachs as a general rule. My vet has signs posted saying NOT to feed raw, because there is so much of a chance of bacteria, etc.

We feed raw and every vet I've had says not to because of bacteria. But, none of the people I know who feed raw have ever had a problem. It is more of a danger to the humans handling the raw chicken than to the dogs.

I asked my vet one time why dogs can eat poop and drink out of mucky water puddles and not get sick. He said their digestive tracks process faster than ours. So, the bad stuff evidently doesn't stay around as long.

Heck, yes, we're SCAVENGERS. Comes from our proud wolf heritage. I think that sounds a lot better than garbage eaters.
