Know how to Approach a dog!

Teaa on Kids & Pets - Wed, June 18 2008

teach your kids, toddlers to not "rush" a dog/puppy to pet them!
yeah, the child sees a "doggy or puppy" they want to hug or pet....they don't know what the animal is feeling.....animals see a "foreign object charging towards them" and that not only intimidates most dogs, but causes them to go into Protect Myself mode!....some will bite first, sniff later!!!! Teach your young ones to walk slowly towards the animal with their hand extended backwards and fingers cupped in to the palm (just in case of a "biter")...let the animal sniff the hand and teach the child to talk gently to the animal as the animal sniffs.....most likely a new friendship is made!!!!!

Also if a dog goes after a child, tell them (the child) to get in a "tornado drill" position. I saw this on a show called "After the Attack" on animal planet. If it can protect a 10-year-old from an angry moose, it should protect a toddler from a dog. And if a dog bites your hand, make it into a tight, solid fist.
