pond nitrogen cycle

Lynn on Activities - Sat, June 14 2008

I've had a 45 gallon aquarium set up as a community tank for years. So I'm familiar enough w/ the nitrogen cycle. What I don't understand is the course of a nitrogen cycle in a pond. There are so many variables involved in ponds that aren't in my aquarium. IE: live plants, direct sunlight, rain water, etc. I'm really glad that I didn't take Connie up on her offer of koi because two of our three feeder goldfish have died. I've read over and over again that properly set up ponds thrive on neglect. Before I kill any more goldfish someone help me out here.

Feeder goldfish are already way stressed because they don't get the same care as "pet" fish. So, it may have been the fish and not your pond. I have to say my pond thrives on neglect. This is my third one and I've never done a single water test on any of them. If the one fish is ok, let it be in there for a week or so and let the water levels settle down. Since you already have an aquarium, I'm sure you know about all the stuff you can dump in to help bring down the levels. Does the pond have a good filter system? I have upgraded my pond filters to more than what was recommended and I do change the filters relgiously.
