SO much to say!

Debbie on Activities - Wed, June 11 2008

Well, I haven't been able to post or comment since yesterday morning and I'm going through withdrawl!

Yesterday evening my neighbor came over and wanted me to "come look at something". She showed me a baby squirrel that must have been sick and pushed from the nest. He was obvioulsy sick and weak.

Keith put the squirrel in a box (with heavy gloves on, of course) and I put some cat food in there for him. Well, he was screaming mad at us but didn't have the strength to eat.

I put him under our front window so we could keep an eye on him. My daughter was very worried that a cat would get him. There was a cat sitting on our sidewalk this morning but he was just taking a bath and didn't bother our squirrel.

He made it through the night but was considerably weaker. By noon, he was barely breathing and must have crossed over the rainbow bridge shortly after we checked on him... bless his little heart.

My daughter and I buried him at the side of the house where the roses are just about 20 min. ago. She said a little prayer and was very understanding that he is in a better place now.

He was so skinny and there were flies on him when we got him last night so who knows what he had. Whatever it was, it was nasty and I'm glad he's passed on.

I tried to post about this last night and I couldn't. Of course, I was looking for advice about what to do but that's all over. The sick, injured ones always seem to find me. My neighbor wanted to kill him, but I just couldn't let her. I had to see if he was just a "little sick" or real sick. I know now.

You did all you could for the baby squirrel. Nature has its ways about stuff.

That is such a touching story :( We had the same thing happen with a little chipmunk who got into our house somehow a couple of years ago. He was barely hanging on and my mom tried massaging his sides lightly, just trying to get the blood flowing again. But it was too late for him and it upset us so much. Poor little guys; at least he is now in a better place.

Stuff like that is always tough. We have a baby bird that fell from a nest in our backyard. He's been there for at least four days and I see the mama bird come and feed him. Hopefully, the little guy will make it - he has gotten bigger.

I seem to be the go to person in my area, too. Its always so sad when you really can't help them.

Wait until Perl, Beauregard and the others hear that you have betrayed us and tried to help the squirrels. And I thought you were a nice lady and on our side. Geesh!!

My sweet Hoovie... the plan WAS to raise him as a dog then he could infiltrate the squirrel population and act as out agent. 00-NUTS

I know what you mean, I tried to save a baby bird once that had very bad diarrhea and I could not get his feces to solidify up a bit. It was so sad.
