Rescued Foster Dog-Please Help!

Finnegan on Activities - Sun, June 08 2008

Hello-

My husband and I went down to foster one of the dogs from a rescue in Martinsville that was severely flooded and had to evacuate all 100 dogs. The dog we have is extremely terrified and will not let us near him. When we were trying to put him in our car he bit my husband's neck, so we know he's capable of biting since he's so scared. He stayed in our backyard overnight with food, water, and a bed. He slept on the bed the entire night. When I went out this morning he ran from me and does nothing but growl at us. We have no idea what to do. We have been keeping our dog separated and taking him out for bathroom breaks in the front yard. I hate leaving dogs outside, but at this point we don't have a choice. Does anybody have any advice? I'm just really stressed and worried about the dog and want it to be safe and comfortable. Thanks for any help!

My first suggestion is to not try to catch the poor thing. All dogs can bite if they're scare enough. First, make sure there is plenty of water in the back yard. I would take some high value treats (i.e. hot dogs, cheese, or something like that outside with you. Just sit. Periodically, throw a piece of the treat of choice towards the dog. Slowly (I mean really slowly), lure him towards you. Do NOT reach for him. You want him to think that your presence = good things. You need to gain his trust, and let this be his decision. If you really need more help, please PM me today. I can probably make it out there to help you if needed.

Wow, I didn't know there were any animals that had been flooded out. I worried about it. How great of you to take one.

What kind of dog is it? Dogs can live just fine outside, they just need shade and shelter as well as food and water.

It is probably feeling safer out there than in your house.

Marci is right, high value treats can be miracle workers. I would just sit in the back yard with it and anytime it got curious enough to come close, I would throw it a hot dog or something similar.

You can also send me an email at batmanmom@gmail.com and I'll send you my phone #.

Thanks to both of you for your advice and offering to help! The conditions at the rescue were awful, it was so sad to see. All of the dogs were pretty traumatized. He is a black lab mix, medium sized. His name is Trooper. We are going to go buy some hot dogs soon and sit out there for awhile. I will keep you updated on his progress and let you know if we need more help. Thanks so much!

Does that rescue group need more foster homes for the dogs? Although I live on the north side of Indy, I would be willing to help foster. Please PM me if you know of someone I can contact to offer help.
