Darn skunks

Oakley on Activities - Sun, June 08 2008

Boy do I need help. Mom let me out to go potty one last time before bed and I was out for about 4 minutes, long enough to get sprayed by a darn skunk. Mom immediately gave me a bath at 11:45pm last night hoping that she could get at least some of the smell off before bed but I don't think she slept very well. She said she smelled it all night. We need some remedies to get rid of this aweful smell so mom can kiss the top of my head again. We heard that the tomoto juice remedy didn't really work. Any other solutions that work wonders?

I have heard adding vinegar and lemon juice to the bath water helps. Also, you could try Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. You will need to buy at least two bottles. Work it into the fur and you don't even have to rinse it off. It is better than peroxide, which can alter dog's hair color.

Where do I find this stuff? I found a remedy online that uses hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Will Oakley's fur turn orange if I use peroxide?

Here's a link for ordering online, but I doubt if you want to wait that long. I also read that vinegar and water or apple vinegar and water works. I also read that 7up or Sprite soak followed by a bath with their normal shampoo might work. Good luck!

My dog got skunked a couple of years ago. It was bad. I used the Hydrogen Peroxide/Baking Soda/Dishwashing liquid mix and it worked really well. I've heard that it's the only thing that works well, better than the stuff you can buy at the pet store. My dog is white and it did not discolor her fur at all. I think that's tomato juice that does that.
You need to wash your dog asap though. The longer you let the skunk oil sit the harder it will be to get out. You really should not wash the dog with water first. The skunk spray is an oil and water doesn't help. It can actually make it worse.
Make sure you let the Peroxide mixture sits as long as you possibly can have it on your dog. I washed it out too soon and had to re-do it. My dog was not happy. Massage it in your pup's fur and take him for a 20 minute walk to keep him occupied and not licking on the mixture. It is toxic to eat and can cause blindness if he gets it in the eyes.
You can Google "skunk, hydrogen peroxide" and you'll get the recipe with directions.
You may not get all the stink out so prepare to keep your windows open. When my girl was skunked she'd start smelling again every time she got wet for months. Not so bad that I could't live with it though.

Good luck.

Good luck.

Well, I tried the peroxide/dish soap/baking soda mix and for the most part, it did pretty well. There is still a slight lingering smell but it is around his eyes and nose and I didn't want to get that stuff in his eyes. I am going to call a few people tomorrow and see if there is anything I can do for his face but the big smell is gone. The down side--Oakley is slightly orange around his neck and his ears. He is dark chocolate so I can notice it really well but I think anyone else may not. He isn't quite dry all the way so we will see in the morning light just how bad. LOL Thanks for everyone's advise.

My family swears by tomato juice after being skunked. The tomato juice shouldn't be harmfull to his eyes or nose. I'd try to find sodium free if possible, don't think getting super salty tomato juice in your eyes would feel good.
