Anniversary of Tom's Death

Tiffany on Grief - Fri, June 06 2008

Today has been a year that I saw Tom get hit and killed by a truck. I can still see it happen over and over again. I can't even walk across the street to where he was at or even go down the steps on the side that he ran up afterwards. It happened at 12:25 on a Wednesday, and I sat outside on the porch with him for two hours, that is where he died at. I still miss him very much, and I still blame myself for it.

I'm so sorry. I can't imagine seeing that happen to your baby. Please try not to blame yourself. Accidents sometimes happen no matter how good of a pet owner we are. I do understand how you feel because I'm always feeling guilty about things with my girls. The hardest thing is to forgive ourselves.

Tiffany, this day has to be so hard for you. My Sheila (alias Houdini) escaped from 2 fences when she was 2 yo. I also saw her get hit. I'm lucky that she's okay, but she will always have a bad leg. Since our animals are thinking creatures with their own motivations, we can not always control their behavior. I feel guilty as well, but I know I could not have stopped her that day. The squirrel she was chasing was far more important than listening to me. Unfortunately, accidents happen, and, like Stacy said, we have to forgive ourselves.
