comments about breeding

Kris on My Blog - Thu, June 05 2008

I recently read a post about someone wanting to breed their mini dachsund. It made me want to share this story with you. This is my story from yesterday's trip to get my hair done. You always learn something interesting while you're in the spa!

While I was getting my hair done yesterday, my hairdresser was telling me about her neighbor's dog that she and her husband have somewhat rescued. The dog is a red cocker spaniel named Copper. Their neighbor is a single male who works third shift. He doesn't let Copper into the house. He keeps her chained outside or in the garage. If that's not bad enough, he didn't have Copper spayed because he wanted to breed her.

That alone makes me want to comment, as Mama Muttblood did the other day, that some people are stuck on stupid. The owner won't care for his dog to start with...he only wants her to have puppies for money.

So, Copper got pregnant. Several weeks ago when we had a storm, she broke her chain (yes, the owner had left her out in the storms) and went to my hairdresser's house, scratching at the door and begging to be let in. Amy let her in, and Copper is still there. The neighbor agreed to pay Amy to keep Copper through the pregnancy, delivery and first few weeks of puppyhood. Copper delivered 7 puppies--three cockers and four lab/cocker mixes (yes, two different dads). Four of the puppies have been taken and three remain, as well as Copper.

So Amy is looking for a rescue group or people willing to take Copper. The puppies, I guess, are being sold relatively easily, although Amy said if it were up to her, she'd be giving them to good homes (not selling them). The owner is the one who is selling them.

This story makes me mad and sad. Mad because people are so dumb. How could Copper's owner treat her like that and then breed her? Why weren't the dogs that impregnated Copper neutered? I know why Copper wasn't spayed.

And now, there are 7 puppies and one cocker spaniel in the world. Four have been placed and four need placement. Irresponsible pet ownership...a prime example.

Thanks for letting me vent.

That is such a sad story. I feel awful for Copper : ( Maybe the neighbor will just let them keep her after all is said and done. And I really hope he is somewhat looking into the homes the pups are going to. Some people are sick enough to buy puppies just to use as bait for dog fighting. Not saying that is neccessarily the case here, but I have heard it before. I also never knew a female dog could get impregnated by 2 males dogs and give birth to both litters at once. That is interesting. I will pray for Copper and those puppies.

I had the same frustration with a coworker who hasn't had her pitbull fixed because she doesn't want to take his "manhood" away, and she wants him to be a daddy. People are nuts sometimes.

That is so sad. People just don't get it! And the rest just don't care. It's very disappointing and I'd tell your neighbor to fix her herself. My mom did that to all the dogs in Pittsboro when I was a kid. She was sick of all the idiots letting their dogs run free in the country and make more dogs so she did things her way. Ha ha! My mom is a nut and I love it.

Not like it will matter but tell her that 1 in every 600 pitbulls finds a forever home.

That is so sad. I hope a rescue takes her gets her fixed and finds a loving home where she belongs.

I am not sure what your experience has been in indy, but I was told once that you should always charge something even if it's one dollar for the puppy so that the buyers will think of it as an investment- something of value that did have a cost and needs to be taken care of. Real animal lovers will not need this but the average person off the street... well who knows.

It's something I've heard from people who work in animal rescue from several different states. There is the occasional responsible person who takes good care of their "free" pet, but for every one of them... there's many, many more who aren't responsible.

One of my vets hit the nail on the head with this comment. According to him, the people that provide the best care for their pets are the ones that have BOTH an emotional and financial investment in their pets. I don't mean that they paid outrageous amounts of money for their animals but that they have spent something on it. Some people see free pets as disposable because they didn't pay anything for them. as far as Copper, I think we are going to be able to take her into WAGS. I've PM"ed Kris for info so hopefully she will be with us soon.

I've been out of town for a day or so with no access to a computer, so sorry I haven't been able to reply.

It's ironic...the comments about charging someone for the puppies. I didn't pay anything for Deuce or Francie and I take excellent care of them. I'm sure that's not the norm though. I just thought it was ironic!

Monica, I'll get in touch with you after I've had a chance to touch base with Amy. And I haven't heard back from the lady with Matisse yet. I just talked to her Tuesday and then have been out of town. I'm going to call her yet this afternoon. I'll keep you all posted.

This reminds me of a woman I work with. She makes me so mad I just want to shake her. Her family has a unaltered male pit that they keep chained to a tree. The dog next door went into heat so of course the pit broke free and went to visit the neighbors dog. The woman I work was fined for her dog being loose, for having him chained to a tree all the time and for not having his shots current. She was given so many days to get him current on vaccines and fixed neither of which she's done yet. She says her husband doesn't want to get the dog fixed and that they want at least one litter of his pups. This kind of person has no business having a dog period let alone a pit. This kind of person is just as bad as dogfighter in my book. They obviously can't take good care of the dog they have so they won't be taking any better care of the pups either. Sorry, they make me crazy.

Kinda sounds like its time for some covert action! When the people are gone for the day, 'steal' the dog, get him neutered... Then return him as if you just 'found' him, with no idea about who lopped off his balls.
