Boomer's Medication Results

Brad on Health - Wed, June 04 2008

As most frequent readers know, Boomer is scared to death of car rides. Shaking the crate, yelling, and even occasional vomitting take place because of his extreme anxiety of the car ride. So, at his last visit, I bought some medication that is supposed to "sooth" Boomer. On the move to Hagerstown, I tried it and observed him closely to make sure he didn't have any severe results. Even though he did not have any SEVERE results, I did not like what the meds were doing to my Boomer Bud. First, it did not stop his yelling. Shaking the crate and vomitting were nonexistant, but the yelling was louder and more persistant than normal (or so it seemed). When we finally did get home, Boomer was thirsty. So thirsty, he refused to leave the water dish. He simply sat there and drank all day until the meds began to wear off. Then there were eye problems. Even though I know little about cat's eyes, it looked as if they have two eyelids. Well, Boomer's membranous eyelids were shut, but he refused to shut his outer ones. He went around all day knocking into things. I didn't want to leave him in a room for fear he may get himself in trouble, so I followed him around all day, and if I had to leave, I left him in my room on his bed with plenty of water. Finally, Boomer's mood definately changed. He was not the playful, rambunctious, happy-go-lucky cat I usually know. Instead he turned into a piece of hell on four paws. He would hiss and smack anything that went by him, including me (probably because he couldn't clearly see what was passing him and it made him nervous. He did not want to be touched, held, or even spoken to. Hissing and growling was all Boomer could do that day while on the meds. Of course, the next day he was still drowsy, but back to his old self. In conclusion, no more meds for Boomer. I would rather make arrangements for him during the 13 hour drive than to medicate him again. Darn meds, anyways!

You might try Pet Eeze from Petsmart. I used that for Hootie when it was storming or the 4th of July. It was amazing. It's all natural so no nasty side effects. It just takes the edge off. I could imagine him sitting there thinking how pretty the fireworks were. It doesn't knock them out either. It's about $8 I think for the bottle. Or you might try Bach's Rescue Remedy. It's all natural and made from flower essences. You can find it in health stores. They have other ones but I think the rescue remedy would be what you are looking for. Sounds the meds really made him loopy. I wouldn't give them again either.

Oh my gosh....poor Boomer. I had a yorkie that really did not like storms and used Rescue Remedy. It did seem to calm him down somewhat. He just didn't seem as anxious....maybe not as focused on the storms.

Poor Boomer, sounds like the meds just aren't right for him. I don't blame you for not wanting to use them anymore. Gunner gets Melatonin when it's going to storm or we know there'll be fireworks. It's another natural relaxer/sleep aid. It helps, but doesn't completely knock him out, which I like. I've head good things about Rescue Remedy as well.

Dang, Brad -- that's horrible! I too would ditch that med and never put it in my kitty again. Good thing he traveled with you and you had the time to spend with him afterwards. Frightening. I'd try what other suggested -- Rescue Remedy. What happens if you do nothing but crate him? Does he eventually calm down? Have you tried the little "fun" trip thing? My old kitty was this same way but we had to move across country with her & my dog. We started our travel during the height of cat nap time (ie: daytime) and within 2 hrs, she *finally* settled in with no problems after that. Good luck to you & Boomz!

Oh! Poor Boomer. I'm glad he's back to his old self. You just never know how meds are going to impact them. Maybe some of the natural remedies will work.

Sheesh. That must be some awful stuff. I can picture you with your eyes like that and hissing. But you looked kinda creepy, huh? Maybe take that stuff for Halloween. I'm glad that you're all better. That would have freaked my mom out.

Never had to travel more than two hours with him. Traveling home (1.5 hours) he meows as loud as he can all the way, nonstop. I don't want him out of the crate for it might be dangerous for both of us. During the summer when time gets closer I'm going to do small trips to see if he can handle it. As for the natural stuff, I might have to order it online, no Petsmart or Petco here. Thanks for the advice, everyone!

Poor Boomer! That's pretty scary. I hope you're able to find something else that works better for him.

That's why I warned you about 'testing' Acepromazine at home before trying to drive with him... some animals don't react well to it. I haven't tried Pet Eeze, but I have tried Rescue Remedy without any success. Maybe ask a vet about what size dose of Benedryl may help? That should make him sleepy, and doesn't last as long as Acepromazine (also fewer weird side effects).

Amazingly enough I can relate to this. Eddie gets carsick. We've tried everything. Crate and no crate. No crate he does okay for short rides, but long rides he still drools himself to dehydration and eventually vomits. Our vet told us to use Benadryl. When we had to move to Fishers from Terre Haute we gave him two benadryl. He was asleep for most of the car ride, and there seemed to be no affects.

Poor Boomer what a scary experience. Maybe talking to your vet and asking for suggestions might help.

Mom would have flipped out!!!!! I glad to hear your okay now. I like cammomile tea, so mom makes it for me when I get really wacked out (or when she's having it and just wants me to chill).

Does he get scared just sitting in the car? They suggest making it fun... play in the car but not moving; turn the car on but not moving; back down the drive and back, etc. All with something that he finds rewarding - play time, treats, mousie, etc. My kitty actually had to fly from Ft. Lauderdale to Japan so we had to work her up to long times in her crate and lots of situations before that flight so she could handle the around the world trip. She also had a "best friend" (for her, it was a little stuffed monkey) that was ALWAYS in her crate and bed with her - like a security blanket of sorts.

When you described him as meowing nonstop you have described my Aden perfectly. Coming to my parents house and back to school 2.5 hours is lots of fun, but I have never wanted meds. He does not defecate, urinate, or vomit, so I figured I could put up with the noise.

Boomer, my friend, it sounds as though you had a paradoxical reaction to the medication. Darn shame you couldn't have had some Scotch to take the edge off. Glad to hear you are back to your old sweet self. Sir Denny Crane
