Elevator needed, scared of stairs

Baby on Activities - Tue, June 03 2008

Tornado sirens going off Friday night. Mom starts taking us to the garage which is underneath the house. Jasmine won't go down the stairs. What are we going to do, leave her up there taking a chance to get blowed away with the house to the land of OZ?? Dad wasn't home so Mom had to take Jasmine the alternate route which is out the backdoor, around the house, through the lightening and pouring rain, risking her life, to bring Jasmine through the garage door. 1 hour later, it's over, no damage, and we go back up the stairs. NO, not Jasmine. She used to go up on her freewill but never down and now she decides she won't do it. So Mom has to take her again out the garage door, around the house, still lightening and drenching rain, to the back door. We need an elevator or an upgrade to our laundry chute Mom could slide her down there. The wicked witch didn't fly by with Toto and we are all thankfully in our home safe, no thanks to Jasmine.

Glad you are all safe, Baby. Has your Mom tried, in not scary situations, to work with Jasmine on her stair fears? step / treat / step / treat? Even if she dislikes them, in emergencies, that fear could have had bad results.

You know, I was scared of stairs when I was a baby. Mom worked w/ me walking up and down them. She'd move my paws for me until I realized it was okay and I wasn't going to fall. Now I will tell you that it's either all the way up or all the way down the things...no stopping in the middle!

This is what mom had to do with me. I was okay with all the stairs except the ones to the basement. Mom said I HAD to learn to use those stairs so she didn't have to deal with issues on top of a bad storm. I don't go alone, but I'll go with mom now.

I love stairs. I go up and down even though Mama says it's not good for me. When I was little and would travel with Mama, the cowboys would carry me up the stairs cause they felt bad for me and my short legs. Can your Mama get Jasmine a cowboy to carry her up and down???? But if not, the treats for steps is a good plan.

Yes, I tried step/treat at different times which surprised me because Jasmine is crazy about food. I would get her up 1 or 2 steps and tell her how good it was. She weighs 68, so I can't lift her. She used to go up but not down, now neither. Maybe it's arthritis which she is on medicine for. Maybe I need to use a better treat like steak or just hope my husband is home next time to carry her. We'll work on it. If she saw a squirrel, she'd probably race down the steps, but no thanks on that one!

I totally understand...Hunter was already 5 when we bought our house and had never seen step before so I can understand his reluctance to go down them. But we got raven a few months after we bought the house and as a pup, she would go down the basement steps so we never thought anything about it. Then all the sudden, she started refusing to go down the steps. We have tried the step/treat, step/treat thing, we've even tried throwing her frisbee down the steps...nothing! She is an absolute frisbee fiend so we were suprised she wouldn't go after it. Any of you all have any other suggestions? I worry like Julie does about my husband not being home and me having to carry her down the steps.
