Triumph - Melanie's Legacy

Derek & Amy on Activities - Fri, May 30 2008

Friends,

Two weeks ago today, my and Amy's lives were irrevocably altered when our youngest dog - our beloved Melanie - died suddenly and unexpectedly in a freak incident involving a post-surgical blood clot, despite heroic efforts by her veterinarian to save her.

Today, on the two week anniversary of Melanie's death, we have an announcement. Indiana-PAW has formed a collaboration with the Humane Society of Indianapolis (HSI) and Indianapolis Animal Care & Control (IACC) to launch "Melanie's Legacy Foundation." Through Melanie's Legacy Foundation, we will, every April 1st (the day Amy adopted Melanie) pull a dog and a cat from HSI and from IACC who - like Melanie - are 100% out of options. We'll then make sure those animals are fully vetted and fostered until a dream home can be secured for them.

PLEASE VISIT MELANIE'S LEGACY FOUNDATION WEBPAGE TODAY:
http://www.indiana-paw.com/melanie.htm Here are a few things you'll find:

(1) Information about how YOU can support Indiana's homeless animals through Melanie's Legacy Foundation.

(2) A 9 minute video tribute to Melanie, which celebrates not just her inspirational and improbable life, but just as importantly, is a reminder of the potential that EVERY forgotten animal has if given a chance.

(3) Video coverage of Melanie's memorial service that took place last Saturday, which 75 people attended, including video of the memorable service, the police escort processional that included Melanie in her hearse with cars winding along behind her, the beautiful butterfly release in the park to celebrate Melanie and shelter animals like her, and the fun cheeseburger and malt luncheon we held in Melanie's honor at Mug 'n Bun. This BEAUTIFUL service was all orchestrated by A PET REMEMBERED, and you'll see a link to A PET REMEMBERED on our Melanie's Legacy Foundation website.

(4) Fun stuff - like a hilarious video tribute to Melanie from Brad Phifer, formerly of Indy Humane, and a hilarious e-mail about Melanie from former HSI employee Ash Lewin, whom Melanie chased up a chain link fence and trapped.

Thank you to all of the wonderful people who have reached out following Melanie's death, and to the wonderful people helping make sure her life has lasting meaning in our community.

Melanie was my adopted "sister," and I miss her so much. I'm really glad my mom and dad and all of their Indiana-PAW friends are doing Melanie's Legacy Foundation, because I love Melanie, and I think it's SO COOL that she's going to continue to live through other animals that are helped by her Foundation. EVERYONE, please go see the Melanie's Legacy Foundation website and watch the 9 minute tribute to my sister, Melanie:

Like Wyatt, I was also Melanie's adopted "brother." My mom and dad adopted me from a shelter too. Sometimes Melanie and I didn't agree on stuff (like who was gonna be in charge), but I loved her, and I miss her. Please go see her page and watch the 9 minute tribute my mom and dad made her, at the Melanie's Legacy Foundation site:

Thanks,
Gatsby

I met Melanie, and she was a beautiful and nice dog. I'm proud that she was such a special dog that her Foundation is going to help other shelter dogs like her (and me - I'm a former shelter dog) get a second chance at life. I hope everyone goes to visit Melanie's Legacy Foundation to watch her video and be inspired:

This is a beautiful tribute and video to Melanie, and a great way to allow Melanie's spirit to live on through saving other animals' lives. Godspeed Melanie.
