When I told my husband about the "close encounter" with the lycra-behind-kind, he decided he wants to go walking with us so that I can point out Neon Spandex Dude. I can't tell if Hunter wants to laugh in the guys face or yell at him or what. Next time something like that happens, I should just use my airhorn. LOL--that'll scare Carolina more than anyone else!
As a cyclist, I avoid MUPs if I can... Dogs, children, people with walkmans, etc. And I've had experiences with a variety of people... I give warning, several times only to have the people totally ignore me (ON YOUR LEFT ON YOUR LEFT ON YOUR LEFT, guess I don't holler loud enough, I also used to have a bell -- which didn't work either) only for them to be angry as I roll slowly past. Sorry, I can't carry an airhorn designed for a semi. I just shake my head, people need to be aware of their surroundings EVERYWHERE they go. This means occasionally checking behind them to see if there's anyone coming up and so on.
Whenever we are walking I make the girls sit and stay if a car, pedestrian, or biker approaches. On the Monon we can't exactly do that for pedestrians, but if I hear a bicycle in enough time, I make them sit and stay. At the very least, we pull all the way over to the right so there is no room for a mishap of any kind. Plus I like for the rider to be aware that I am making an effort to keep them out of his/her way.
I'd bet money your hubby just wants a good laugh! I mean, I'm cracking up just picturing a dude with the "lycra-behind-kind" wobbling back and forth before smacking the ground! How long did he wobble? The longer, the better. That's quality stuff! Oh, glad no one was hurt.
Just like walkers appreciate riders letting them know they're approaching, cyclists like it when people control their pets and children. Short leash = good, retractable leashes that vary constantly in length = UTMOST EVIL!! Don't ask how many times I've been nearly closelined by those things and I don't ride fast on MUP's. If I want to go fast, I ride on the street.
Yeah, we are the same way. I can usually hear a bike approaching or Carolina will hear it. All the other bikers warn in advance; seems courteous and logical. I think the guy was going too fast to warn properly.
