Neon Spandex Dude

Carolina on Activities - Tue, May 27 2008

To the guy in the neon green and bright blue spandex biking gear on the Fall Creek Pkwy Trail:

I'm really sorry I startled you and you crashed your bike, but your bike is really quiet and you kinda snuck up on us. I'm usually a very sweet, mild mannered dog and I have never had a problem with cyclers. I only barked at you because you barked at me first. I mean, yelling "LEFT!!" out of the blue like that you made me jump out of my skin! You might as well just shout "BOO!" It's only natural for a startled dog to bark. You're lucky I'm not a biter or your bike tires would have gotten it for sure!

I think you upset my mom when you were rude when she asked if you were okay. I know it wasn't really dignified or cool to be in a heap on the grass (at least it was grass and not concrete), but really you kinda left your dignity at the door when you put on your neon green skivvies when you don't even know how to ride a bike.

I think I'll let Lance Armstrong know that his record is safe.

If you want, my mom can get you some dog tags to jingle so that we can hear you coming next time.

Bark! (haha!)

**Carolina's Mom Talking Now**
For the record, Carolina was on a short leash, we were on the right side of the trail, and the biker didn't say left until he was right next to my ear. I jumped, Carolina jumped and immediately started barking, then the biker jumped, bike wobbled and fell over. I imagine it may have been funny to someone not involved.

Holy cow Carolina, you didn't fall down laughing???? Guess he'll know better next time. Sorry the guy fell but he startled you and you didn't do it on purpose right? Geez..

I agree, that guy needs tags. They're supposed to give ADVANCED notice! Sheesh. I probably would have had those tires!

I would have done the SAME thing. Sorry pal, but ever heard of a bell?!?! Some of us are skittish!

I think it's pretty funny. Thank Dog Carolina and you weren't hurt. The heck with the spandex dude Lance wannabe.

Yeah, those bike riders can be scary. I am always paranoid that one of my dogs will be part of such an accident. It's like we annoy them and they annoy us.

*shuddering at the spandex...* The guy needs a bell, like cows or cats.

When I told my husband about the "close encounter" with the lycra-behind-kind, he decided he wants to go walking with us so that I can point out Neon Spandex Dude. I can't tell if Hunter wants to laugh in the guys face or yell at him or what. Next time something like that happens, I should just use my airhorn. LOL--that'll scare Carolina more than anyone else!

As a cyclist, I avoid MUPs if I can... Dogs, children, people with walkmans, etc. And I've had experiences with a variety of people... I give warning, several times only to have the people totally ignore me (ON YOUR LEFT ON YOUR LEFT ON YOUR LEFT, guess I don't holler loud enough, I also used to have a bell -- which didn't work either) only for them to be angry as I roll slowly past. Sorry, I can't carry an airhorn designed for a semi. I just shake my head, people need to be aware of their surroundings EVERYWHERE they go. This means occasionally checking behind them to see if there's anyone coming up and so on.

Whenever we are walking I make the girls sit and stay if a car, pedestrian, or biker approaches. On the Monon we can't exactly do that for pedestrians, but if I hear a bicycle in enough time, I make them sit and stay. At the very least, we pull all the way over to the right so there is no room for a mishap of any kind. Plus I like for the rider to be aware that I am making an effort to keep them out of his/her way.

I'd bet money your hubby just wants a good laugh! I mean, I'm cracking up just picturing a dude with the "lycra-behind-kind" wobbling back and forth before smacking the ground! How long did he wobble? The longer, the better. That's quality stuff! Oh, glad no one was hurt.

Just like walkers appreciate riders letting them know they're approaching, cyclists like it when people control their pets and children. Short leash = good, retractable leashes that vary constantly in length = UTMOST EVIL!! Don't ask how many times I've been nearly closelined by those things and I don't ride fast on MUP's. If I want to go fast, I ride on the street.

Yeah, we are the same way. I can usually hear a bike approaching or Carolina will hear it. All the other bikers warn in advance; seems courteous and logical. I think the guy was going too fast to warn properly.

What's an MUP?

We get those guys out at Mamaw's all the time. They come in packs. Lots of spandex. Mama said if the yelling didn't scare you, the spandex would have. Glad everyone was okay. Perhaps next time he'll be vocal a little earlier. Good for Carolina protecting her Mama from the big green spandex monster.
