New Law Cracks Down on Animal Fighting and Puppy Mills

The U.S. Senate yesterday followed the lead of the House of
Representatives and overrode President Bush’s veto of the
Farm Bill, ushering in key new protections for animals. The
final bill--which is now considered law, except for one section
excluded due to a technical glitch--bans the import of puppies
from foreign puppy mills for commercial sale in the U.S. The law
spares young, unweaned, and unvaccinated pups from harsh,
long-distance transport--during which they are exposed to
extreme temperatures and often die in cargo holds--and will keep
foreign breeders from adding to the tragic overpopulation of
pets in this country.

The Farm bill also adds a provision to federal law to make
almost any form of animal fighting a federal felony. It’s
also now a federal crime to knowingly possess or train animals
for fighting , and the maximum prison time for a single
violation of any section of the law goes from three years to
five years. It is hard to overstate what a blow this is to
dogfighters and cockfighters, and it brings us one step closer
to eradicating these criminal industries.

The law also authorizes an increase in potential
fines--quadrupled from $2,500 to $10,000--for violations of the
Animal Welfare Act, fines that haven’t been upgraded in
more than 20 years. Such penalties will more effectively deter
abuses at puppy mills, laboratories, circuses, and other
facilities that use animals.

Animal Fighting Magazine to be Pulled from Amazon.com

On Tuesday, in another blow to animal fighters, we reached a
settlement with one of the defendants in our federal lawsuit
challenging the sale of two criminal animal fighting magazines
on Amazon.com in violation of the federal Animal Welfare Act.
The publishers of “The Gamecock” magazine agreed to
permanently change the magazine’s format to exclude all
ads for fighting animals, knives, and other illegal
paraphernalia, and to stop selling the magazine on Amazon.com
until it has demonstrated full compliance with federal law for
one year.

Sadly, Amazon.com has vowed to fight on in the case, arguing
that the First Amendment gives it the right to sell illegal
animal fighting contraband. It wants to remain the only online
retailer selling “The Feathered Warrior,” soon to be
the sole remaining cockfighting trade publication sold on
Amazon.com in violation of federal law. Tell Amazon.com what you
think of its decision to continue profiting from illegal animal
fighting.

I'm so glad the law passed and so ashamed Mr. Bush was trying to get it veto'd. This man seems to constantly amaize me how stupid his decisions are. Also, I'm glad Harry didn't get the job at Amazon. I wouldn't him working for a company that promotes animal fighting.

If this is the same piece of legislation I think this is tied to, I'm actually not happy that the veto was overridden. The bill will allow wealthy farmers to continue to receive subsidies from the government for NOT planting their fields. All of this at a time when crops are at the highest demand, competing between fuel sources and food. I'm glad the animals will be helped, but to me, that's hardly any consolation. I'm very disappointed with our legislators.

Did you know that the government will be buying sugar at $0.23 per pound and then selling it to the ethanol industry at $0.02 per pound???? Guess who is making up that difference? That would be us, the taxpayers. The Indianapolis Star wrote an editorial on this on May 16. It's worth reading.

Wouldn't it be nice if Jeff Bezos and the other head honchos at Amazon would say...yes, we have the first amendment right to sell this filth, but we think that there are more important things than profit sometimes, and we choose not to promote and sell this. I will still not shop on Amazon, which I used to love for the convenience, until they comply with federal law and human decency.

I believe the animal welfare bill should not be linked to the farm bill. While I don't mind farm subsidies for those farmers who really need it, I agree that the very large wealthy farms should not receive the same benefits. The animal welfare law should be a stand-alone law. I wish our elected officials would just do what's right.

Yup, I wasn't crushed at this veto, either. Our legislators pack so much pork and useless legislation into bills like this. There was another bill that was going through the house and senate yesterday . . . maybe a war funding bill? . . . that was loaded with domestic pork. Except for the fact that most of this legislation would never pass unless it was hidden in some other bill, I'll never understand why our senators and congresspeople pull stunts like this. It's not fair to the American people.

Thank you for this information. I have just sent a letter voicing my disappointment to Amazon and am deleting my Amazon account. I am also forwarding this to all my family. Several are heavy Amazon users, but more importantly they are animal lovers. I am sure they will voice their opinions to Amazon as well. Although I wish there was something more I could do, I guess at this point I'm doing all I can.

Okay, I know I'm not a frequent poster on IP, but I am a daily (okay, sometimes hourly, lol!) reader and am always interested to hear what fellow animal lovers have to say. So I have to ask... Have any of you received replies from Amazon? I sent them a message not even five minutes ago and have already received a reply. Their service may have been prompt, but to be honest I think their reply was complete BS. Am I allowed to include a quote from their email to me? Because, BARF. It was ridiculous and worth sharing.

I think Mama Muttblood hits the nail on the head when she says there are sometimes more important things than profit. Obviously, this is not true for Amazon.

I always knew our president was an evil idiot, but now he's stooped to a new level now! What the heck did animals do to that... AAARRRGG!! I'm just glad the law was passed. :)
