To Protect or to Bark & Run?

Woo on Activities - Thu, May 22 2008

So I was very impressed by the stories of Bowie and Ojo protecting their moms.

I've noticed Carolina patrolling the yard and barking threateningly whenever the neighborhood kids get too close to her domain. Loudly warning me that someone not family is here. Scaring off the telephone repairman. Making the meter-reader, drop his meter-reader-device. Once I've come and checked on the "intruder" and told her it's okay, she settles and stays to keeps a watchful eye on them.

Recently, a couple of the neighborhood boys set off her warning bark again while I was cooking dinner. As I had messy hands, I didn't immediately go check to see what she was barking at. Pretty soon, I heard a loud "POP" and then a rapid succession of loud pops, and realized the kids & their dad were setting off firecrackers. Well, it was about a milli-second after the first loud pop that Carolina comes scurrying (all stiff legged and skeert-like) from the screened in patio into the kitchen to hide behind my legs. She tailed me through the kitchen, where she decided to stay while I walked outside to check on the ruckus! What a chicken!

Her nickname is Cacky-Wacky, but lately we just call her Scaredy-Cack.

So do you have little heros like Ojo and Bowie? Or do you have a Scaredy-Cack?

even though my big sister Ojo is pretty brave, right now I'm known as chicken little in my house.

when im outside and someone comes up that i dont know i sure will bark at them and then run after them. but when they turn around to pet me i cower down and piddle. i even bark when the little kids are around and i dont like when the hit each other I bark to tell them to stop. inside on the other hand. when dad and mom play together i make sure they KNOW im not messing around you dont mess with my mommy. i bark and nibble at daddys arms to tell him to back off! then i give mommy kisses to make sure shes ok.

I go right to it. I do not give up. I will fight to the end with any intruder. If mommy welcomes someone, I am more than happy to have you as our guest.

Oh No! Mom hates firecrackers..I mean she really hates them. Kids threw firecrackers at her other dog, Whiplash. After that poor Whiplash was afraid of any and all loud noises. It was so sad to see Whiplash with all of that fear and pain. I don't like then either because they remind me of gun fire. So just call me chicken-little.....but if you come to my front door, I'll let mom know that you are there for sure. I scared off two salesmen this week.

Oh no! Poor Whiplash! What horrible kids! I was relieved to see the Dad was watching the boys with the firecrackers...I dunno I guess they're getting geared up for the race or Memorial Day. Either way, it is not going to be a fun day for Scaredy Cack. I wonder if they make Doggy Ear Plugs.

Scouter, my mom is so proud of you and your mom for all the hard work you've put in. You are making so much progress! Besides I'd take chicken little over demon dog any day!

Sheila and Charlie jump out in front at the slightest sign of danger. Charlie tends to agressively bark, but utlimately runs. I KNOW Sheila would defend me indefinately. I'm not quite so sure about Charlie. Of course, with Sheila on duty, he really doesn't have to.

I am Security Central at our house. No one will enter without my permission.

I will bark at everyone but they are all welcome to come in! I just assume that everyone wants to pet me and bring me treats!!

That is one thing I really miss with not owning a dog. I never know when people come with cats.

My kitties growl when someone comes up to the door - then run and hide.....

I honestly feel much safer having Madison with me, even though she only weighs fourteen pounds.

I am comforted when she barks at a suspicious noise outside. I know a lot of people discourage barking from their dogs, but I like it when Maddy barks at something she deems threatening. Also, once she and I were home alone and I had just stepped out of the shower. The bathroom door was open and she was licking the water off of my toes as I was drying off. Eddie had come home from work and quietly entered the apartment so neither of us heard him come in but when he said something, startling both of us, she whirled around in a frenzy of barks and rushed at him... Then she realized it was just dad. lol But it really made me feel so proud of her that if it had been a real intruder, she would have defended me. (Or at least tried.)

Colton would bark his fool head off and sound mean, but then he would eventually come hide behind my legs. Maize wouldn't even bark, she'd just come and cower. Now Raven is a different story, both her and my dane mix Hunter would defend me and the house with their lives.

Zoe can be quite the watch dog. She barks at noises and people she doesn't trust, but I don't think I could trust my 6 lb dog to defend me!!!

Oh I'm a scaredy cat! I bark when I know I'm safe...i.e. from behind dad's legs, from the balcony, but not until then. In fact, when mom and dad come home and it's dark. I won't make a sound until someone turns on the light and I know it's safe!

Funny story now that you mentioned it. In our livingroom we have a big picture window with two smaller ones on each side. The smaller windows can raise up and have screens. A couple of weeks ago dad opened up the smaller ones and I saw the (evil) mailman walking his rounds. When he came up to MY house I started barking and put my paws on the screen. It popped out and I scared that mailman so much that he dropped the mail and ran. hee hee. My dad was there and pulled me back because I had my head sticking out of the window. Now they have a gate in front of the window when they open the windows so it can't happen again. I was just helping ward off the evil mailman bring letters from some evil guy named Bill. He seems to take all my parents money and there seems to be less and less money to buy me stuff. :)

LOL! Can you imagine how scared the mailman must have been to see your huge barking head coming out of a window?! LOL! My sister's rottie (Kaya) has a big deep bark, but she's a total fraidy cat. One day at a local park, my niece (4 years old) and Kaya were playing when a couple of dogs started running towards them. Kaya didn't cower or become submissive, instead she quietly positioned herself between my niece and the oncoming dogs kinda drawing a line in the sand. The dogs slowed down and the owners caught up, but I thought it was really cool that Kaya turned into a protector around my neice.

I'll bark if someone knocks on the door. I used to just go and look at Mama and then look at the door as if to say...Ummmm, someone's knocking. I used to like fireworks but last year they were a little close and they freaked me out. Mama let me go in the house. I've yet to have to protect Mama but I know I could, I am a Ninja, ya know.

Godzilla does the same with me when we are out in public. He will come stand in front of me quietly and watch if another dog or person comes toward us too quickly.
