Update on the Squirrel Front

Perl on Laws - Thu, May 22 2008

They're back. We should have known, it had been quiet. Too quiet. They were on the deck this morning, and I must say that Bowie showed a lot of promise in this war. If nothing else, a huge black dog with a big ol' stride got their attention. We haven't determined their attention, in spite of Beauregard nibbling their poo, so no other news to report. I suspect that it may have something to do with the race, but it might be a coincidence, too.

By the way, we may be able to recruit new allies. A mated pair of cardinals have nested in the mulberry tree, and they were giving those squirrels merry hell, I'm happy to say. I don't know if we could recruit them, but certainly we can persuade the biped to get some nightcrawlers for them as a thank-you and welcome-to-the-neighborhood present.

Blue Jays---The Screamin' Eagles of the little bird world. I saw four of them putting the big hurt on some squirrels earlier in the month. AND now, we have 18 Canadian Geese in the pond. It's like a feathered armada. Haven't seen much of the squirrels since they arrived. I'll be keeping an eye out this weekend. I will report any activities or chatter.--- LT. ETB

There was one trying to invade our yard this morning. We were unable to catch it. Mostly cause Mom was holding our leashes and wouldn't let us have at them. Mom does not understand.

Those squirrels have the nerve to get on our deck too! Today, there was a rabbit in our yard. I ran like the wind to catch him for interrogation, but he managed to slip under the fence! I gave a very loud, yodeling cry. Mom calls it the "Call of the Beagle". She wasn't impressed and made me come in. I almost had that rabbit and probably would've if mom hadn't distracted me with her yelling. She was in her robe, barefoot running around trying to get me to stop chasing him. I bet she looked really funny!! Good thing mom doesn't mind looking ridiculous or else she may have gotten mad.

Ya know, I think you're right about the cardinals! We have a mating pair and they're pretty vigilant about keeping the yard all to themselves. I haven't seen a squirrel in quite awhile. Now, bunnies on the other hand...just on the wrong side of the fence...

Hey Beauregard...I have an importnat question. What does squirrel poo look like? Is it tiny like rabbit poo? Does it taste as good as cat poo? These are things I want/need to know.

I can honestly say no I haven't. My question to you is "Have you"? It doesn't sound very tasty.

It's sort of like polar bear, with a hint snail darter. More gamy than spotted owl.

The cardinals have moved in to our 'hood too. There is a blue jay on our front tree eating suet and screaming his fool head off!! Something is up. I can't go in the front yard and they know it!! Oreo is all over the front screen chittering at them. I'll report back later...

Stay diligent Perl. We got to surprise a squirrel tonight. Mom added our long lines to our tie-outs. We had a 90 foot radius!!!! That's 30 extra feet that those squirrels weren't ready for! We didn't catch any, but we sure did scare them.

Get the cardinals some safflower seed as a thank you. They love it and squirrels won't eat it, so it's a win-win for everybody.

Mom told me I could kill any grackles I come across. They are my new focus. We hate grackles.
