Will Vultures Eat Cats?

Susan on Health - Wed, May 21 2008

My friend has two large cats, but sometimes when she leaves them outside on the fenced in deck she sees vultures swirling about overhead. She lives in a third floor apt in the woods and is worried that the vultures may carry off one of the cats. I'm totally with her being on the safe side and brining them in; but have any of you heard of a vulture carrying off a large, living cat?

Vultures are nature's scavengers and don't eat anything unless it's already dead. However, hawks, eagles, and owls are predators and will take a cat. If you're sure you're just seeing vultures, you've got nothing to worry about.

It's not the vultures I'd be worried about, it's the big hawks. We never leave Lola our mini-doxie unattended outside. We live in a wooded area, too so there are hawks all over. Not a good idea to have the cats out there either. I have 3 and they are all indoor only.

I agree with Susan. Is the deck completely fenced in with an open top? Hopefully, a cat won't jump off. I had one that loved to sit on the ledge and never did try to jump down. She loved it. One night, she brought me a gift into the house...a little brown bat which she let go once inside.

Yep, its completely fenced with an open top. Both cats are older and , ahem, "large" so they don't jump very high. They absolutely love it out there. I didn't think vultures would catch something living... I've seen the birds, and they are vultures, but you make a very good point about the hawks and such.

I would just make sure they have somewhere to hide if necessary then. Just in case. Better to be safe then sorry.

Hmm, I think Susan is right...vultures probably won't try to hurt the cats unless they are dead. But for some reason it still doesn't seem like a very good idea to have them out there!

lol... As all of the PPs have stated, vultures eat dead things.
