Midnight Party!

Anne on Behavior - Wed, May 21 2008

So, it seems in the last few weeks, our dog Nigel has reverted to NOT sleeping through the night. Nothing about his routine has changed (same 3 walks a day, same food, same treats, same dog day care on Fridays) but he has taken to getting up at around 2am and wanting to PLAY - jumping around, playing with his toys, 'play barking' and wanting to start his day. It is not that he has to go potty b/c I take him out to make sure. We ignore him and he'll settle down (after about an hour or so) but will then sometimes get up again! Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm sort of exhausted and would like to sleep through the night :)

When you find the answer let me know. Maraka has done the same thing the last few nights. this morning at about 3 we finally put her in her kennel. her routine hasnt changed either, dad takes her out to potty she settles down and then bam 30-45 minutes later she is giving me kisses and telling me its time to get up and play. *sigh* i completly understand.

And this is why I will always have at least 2 dogs. Of course with my mini-mooses they can still wake me up when they are playing, but not that often. Sorry, I don't have any helpful suggestions for you Anne.

We've got our first "Bark Tutor" class tonight so I'll ask the trainer and let you know if there is anything we can do!

This may have nothing to do with it, but I have heard from trainers before that dogs behavior can be affected by all kinds of weather related things like barometric pressure, tides, etc. The fact that a couple of you are experiencing the same phenomenon at the same time makes me wonder if there isn't something to that theory.

Charlie does the same thing to mom! Mom just ignores all of the antics and barking, and he eventually gives up and goes back to bed. The key here is to COMPLETELY ignore him, don't talk, don't look at him, don't even open eyes. Even a negative response encourges the little monster.

Batman will get into this habit from time to time, and is doing it now because we have rabbits living in the back yard, so at 2 a.m. Batman thinks the timing is right to go out and catch them. When he starts doing this, I put him in his crate instead of letting him be in the bedroom and after a night or two of this, he goes back to sleeping all night or at least not waking me up.

I am getting mom and dad up at 4 am every morning right now with meowing and crying. I have perfected the art of sounding like a herd of elephants running through the house!! The vet thinks a female is in season or a male cat is in MY terror-tory!! THE NERVE!!!

When/if Deuce wakes up at the wrong time (anything earlier than 5:30am), I tell him to go back to the nighty-night and oddly enough, he does. It may only be for an hour, but boy is that hour important to me!

Not to be a party pooper, but when you get up and recognize him, take him out, hush him, etc., you are giving him exactly what he wants ... attention. I agree with Connie -- I'd crate him in another room so that if / when he cries, you don't hear him and he learns to settle back down at night. Roo was HORRIBLE in her crate - whining all the time but after doing this for a couple of nights, she has settled in and now sleeps thru the nights because we don't get up. Good Luck...

My cats will occasionally do the same thing, but they will get up a beg for food which usually involves banging the bathroom cabinets. I dare you to sleep through that one.

Well, having a beagle I don't really run into this problem since he is quite possibly the world's laziest dog. BUT, I do have an aunt and uncle who have four dogs and have crated them through the night for awhile now. I thought it was kind of mean (of course, my dogs sleep IN the bed and have comfy dog beds of their own,) but when I dog sit for her, the dogs seem perfectly fine with it. They know when it is bed time and they automatically go in their crates like clock work. Would this be an option for Nigel? Hopefully Bark Tudor will have some additional recommendations foe you!

My girls sleep in their crates in another room and have absolutely no problem with it unless the cats flaunt their freedom. I shut the door to the living room, cover the girls crates, and they sleep without waking us up until our alarms go off.
