Jealousy--Little help please

Mama T on Behavior - Mon, May 19 2008

We had a new experience with ETB yesterday, jealous snarfing. My Dad's Rottie was outside and my niece went up to pet him. Ernest jumps up between the two of them and starts snarfing, barking and growling. I yelled and told him No, bad boy. She went in to pet him again and T again did the same thing. Now during this, Rock is completely ignoring Ernest, no response to anything he did. I got T by the collar and took him back, said again No! Then Laney gave Rock a pet and a hug. Then I went to pet Rock and T did not do anything. I told him, Good Boy.

So, did I handle this correctly? Like I said, this is new for me. I'm concerned if T continues, Rock may have enough of this stuff, usually he ignores T unless T gets to close to his food. If Rock retaliates and then someone may get caught in the middle of them.

You know Mom is watching this posting.... our house isn't jealousy but the snarls are still there. Does it help to recognize T first then Rock? That's what we were instructed to do... great Ojo first, feed first, pet first, treat first... then Roo. Helps to reinforce who's in charge to the dogs. And letting them know it's unacceptable behavior is correct too.

Well...It may be that T felt like he was potecting Laney. He probably felt that Rock was a big boy and Laney a small girl that needed protecting. We've had a similar instance w/ Eddie. I've never heard him growl (while he's awake...he does it all the time in his sleep), anyway, our friends came over, and they held their baby up in the air and you know, made baby noises. Anyway, Eddie thought they were going to hurt the baby, so he growled at them. I said no, but then I picked up Eddie and held him close to the baby so that he could see that the baby was okay w/ being held like that and everything was fine. After that he was okay. So, next time, you may try having Laney pet both of them at the same time if that's possible. If not, I'd say what you did was good, it showed T that his behavior was not okay.

I would have done the same thing. Seems right to address the incorrect behavior first.

ETB loves his little Laney! I think you did the right thing. Maybe explain to Laney that she need to be careful with both dogs around. They both love her so much!
