OK, I asked David Horth, board chair of HSI the fate of Amos, the little terrier guy who was on the HSI dog cam for the past few weeks. I am happy to report that David says Amos is alive and well. Amos was getting stressed at the kennel and has been moved to a quieter area and is then going to foster care.
This is exactly what Nathan Winograd talked about. Shelters need to have really dedicated staffs who interact with the animals a lot (Nathan said four times a day for the dogs with at least once being a 30 minute walk). But, that takes a LOT of volunteers.
Otherwise the dogs get really stressed in the kennel and they can start being aggressive.
David also said the following, "For your own peace of mind going forward please understand that HSI no longer kills for space or population control. We euthanize animals that are irretrievably ill or a danger to the community. Once we place an animal on our adoption floor, such as Amos, we will do everything possible and then some to get the animal adopted."
He also said that anyone could call the shelter and find out what happened to an animal. He said to call 317-872-5650.
Again, I really have to say that David has been really kind in responding to my emails and I hope all of you who are interested in the animal welfare issue will keep emailing him.
