Is a foaming mouth ever normal?

Aimee on Health - Fri, May 16 2008

I know a foaming mouth in a dog is a sign of rabies. My wiggins just got her rabies shot 2 days ago so im sure its not that. Anyway, we were all out for a walk and i noticed her mouth start to foam. By the time we got home it was actually almost dripping. On the way home i was asking thomas, my b/f and co-owner of her, if the leash was real tight. He claimed no. On the other hand as soon as we walked into our home Wiggins went straight to her water bowl. I know it's alittle warm out today but, i didn't think it was that bad.

Any suggestions.....should i call the vet? I'm pretty much clueless.

PS. after getting a drink the foam went away.

She was probably just thirsty. Was she barking frantically at anything? Dog? Bike? Hoover does this all the time when he gets all upset over something. I think they just bark themselves dry! I wouldn't worry. Others will have advice more porfessional than mine, but this has been my experience.

Sometime Nigel gets white "spit foam" on the sides of his mouth when we're on a walk (especially when we're speed walking) or if he's out at the dog park playing hard. It usually happens pretty well into the walk and when it is warm out so I chalk it up to him being thirsty. He always takes a drink before and after we get home and never "foams" when he's just hanging around the house.

I foam at the mouth and my teeth start chattering after I have had a "disagreement" with Sydney.

It sounds like you just need a spa day. Or maybe a session with your dad....

I foam at the mouth quite a bit when hiking or running, or if really excited. Mom about freaked the first time it happened. Seems to be normal for me.

I'll take a session with dad, thanks. The kind where he plays with me and there are no other animals in the room.

Animals can foam at the mouth for a number of reasons, excitement being one of them. They can also foam at the mouth from nausea or having a bad taste in their mouth. Since his foaming stopped after he drank, I would think he got a taste of something bad on the walk. However, if it happens again or he has difficulty swallowing or breathing definatley get him to your vet.

I foam at the mouth ALLLLL the time!!!(24/7, hehe) Actually, many dogs do, it was probably because your dog was thirsty, and it's mouth was dry. Next time, get you one of those collapsible bowls and a bottle of water to take on walks, in case it happens again. :)

I would be more concerned it was abnormal for him to sit in the house and foam or if he was in distress and foaming. On walks and when barking as far as I know it just happens sometimes. If there are any other things wrong then look into those too. Otherwise take a long drink!

Casey does this sometimes on our walks. I learned to take water with me just in case. I wouldn't worry unless she just isn't acting normal.
