Farrah update

Mama Muttblood^..^ on Activities - Fri, May 16 2008

Just wanted to give you an update on Farrah the foster dog. Since Papa Muttblood was gone last night and will be gone most of the weekend, I decided to let her sleep in the bedroom with me. The people who will likely adopt her want her to be reliable on her house manners, and I can't really work with any problems if she is crated a great deal of the time. Also, she is going for a sleepover at their house tomorrow night! She put her paws up on the bed once, I told her "off" and she settled down on a cushion on the floor. She paced for about 3 minutes before deciding to settle down, then slept till 7:30! No destructiveness, no intrusiveness, just being a very good girl. I have her on an Easy Walk Harness now, so their 10 year old son can walk her easily. They took her for a vet check yesterday and said she was very good in the car. She was heartworm negative, fecal was negative, no fleas, no obvious problems at all. She's in the latter stages of estrus and he said he could spay her as early as next week. She did put her teeth gently on his arm when he tried to cut her nails, but he realized what a foreign environment she was in, didn't really know any of those people from Adam, and chose not to bite, so that was not a dealbreaker for anybody. So they are just going to have him do the nails when he spays her. I will work with her getting her used to seeing and feeling the nail clipper without actually cutting them, as I am really terrible at that. The family is very much in love with her, but wants to make absolutely sure that she is the right dog for them and vice versa. They are kind of inexperienced, having had 1 dog for 16 1/2 years, none before that, and none since that one died 4 years ago. They are also kind of by the book, buttoned-down folks who would probably flee at the thought of having anything less than and almost perfect companion. But they are loving and responsive with her, and have lots of money to give her good care, and she will have a boy to grow up with. So I will be taking her and her crate (just in case)to their big ass house in Carmel tomorrow afternoon for an audition. Keep your paws crossed that all goes well. I honestly can't imagine that it would not, as she is a total sweetie. And yes, I did finally have her checked for a chip, which she did not have.

Not to rain on a parade...But "who would probably flee at the thought of having anything less than and almost perfect companion" kind of worries me. Is there such a thing as a perfect dog? They know that she'll mess up from time to time right? I mean, I think Eddie's perfect for me, but he's also a stinker too from time to time.

Thanks for the update! There are many dogs that can't handle nail clips (sally the nail witch, eh Yogi / Teddy?). We've got our Jackie Paw's crossed that the sleep over is a successful one.

Well, I work in the same department with this woman, although in a different building, and will be available for consultation as needed. That's why I said "almost" perfect, as they are aware that dogs have their own agenda sometimes that doesn't always mesh with humans. I don't have a bad feeling about them at all, they are just much more analytical about things than I am. They are approaching it from their heads which is why they are successful and have a lot of money. I do things from my heart much of the time and think about the consequences later. If they had been thinking completely with their hearts, they would have taken her home with them last weekend, as they fell in love almost instantly.

I can't handle nail clips either. The very thought makes me want to bite someone.

I find it kinda reassuring that they are so very rational AND have fallen in love with Miss Farrah! And they had a dog for over 16 years! And now circumstances are such that Miss Farrah has come into their lives at the right time because of you! My Magic Eight Ball sez: All signs are positive! You're my hero Mama Muttblood!

I'm a very analytical person. It sounds to me that they just want to be sure before they make the committment; because once they make it - that's it. They're not going back. It took me almost a month to talk myself into bringing Minnie home. I loved her and wanted to adopt her, but I had to analyze everything and make sure I could handle the committment. Good luck to Farrah!! She sounds like a wonderful girl!

I hope every thing works out; Farrah seems like such a sweetheart - reminds me of Darby, not a mean bone in her body. I'm sure everything will work out for the best. Good luck Farrah with your sleep over....

Good luck! I hope it all works out. Sounds like they really want to be sure about their committment. That can be a really good thing!

ok...just making sure, and you're right. Personally, I tend to think w/ my heart, which is how we ended up w/ Eddie the first time we met him :) It probably would have been better to wait to get a pet until after we knew we were settled in for the long haul, but Eddie kinda "chose" me if you know what I mean. I think he saw a sucker and ran for me!

Yep, all true! And Amber, I know I have the word "sucker" tattooed in some dog language all over my body! I found a stray today at the drugstore over by where I work. He just came right up and started sniffing and wagging. Then his owner came out and gave him hell for coming over to see me. Whew! That was a close one!

I'm a heart thinker, too! Can't help it! It sounds like Farrah is going to a home that will take great care of her. You are so awesome to do this for her!! Just imagine, two weeks ago, she was a stray!! Oh and don't be disappointed going from that big a$$ house to mine... :) We don't have one of those.

I'm the same way....it's my downfall. But I can't be any other way, just like they probably can't be any different. Sure hope everything turns out okay as Farrah sounds like such a wonderful girl.

Mom said that's her too which is why come H*ll or highwater, she's doing everything she can for me and not giving up / tossing in the towel or whatever else people told her to do with me. Mom said I'm staying!

And you are SO worth it, Miss Roo!

Harry and I are both heart thinkers. We both think about the "now" and deal with the consequences later. So I know what you are saying. That is how we got Carley and Baby. And kinda like how we got Godzilla. We weren't really looking but wouldn't know what we would do without them. We wish all the luck for Farah that she will be a perfect match for her new family.

I think it's funny and ironic that she went from being a hussie on the street to potentially finding a home with a fancy, rich family in a big house. lol

Hopefully this will be a happy ending. I am a heart thinker too, but my husband is a head thinker. If I didn't have him I guarantee I would have one more cat. There were several reasons why he though two cats were enough though... I guess we should wait for when we have more space.

It's a whole Pretty Woman thing. Maybe I should have named her Julia.

Same here...I'm the impulse shopper and my husband is the stick-to-the-grocery-list kind of guy. I would probably have adopted another dog in the last 11 days already as it kills me not to have another dog roaming around here...
