fleas/ticks

Julie on Activities - Tue, May 13 2008

I'm so confused! We use Sentinel 12 months out of the year for heartworm. WHAT do I NEED to use for ticks and fleas? I don't want to go overboard on the chemicals but I want Sadie to be protected. How big of a problem are ticks if you live in an addition with no woods?
Does anyone use any natural products or nothing at all unless there's a problem?
Help! Thanks!

We use Revolution which takes care of fleas, ticks, heartworm, but I've heard that if you live in the South or in the woods/country, Revolution may not be strong enough. I know that some people give their dogs brewer's yeast (which if anyone responds, I'd like to learn more about) but I'm not sure the dosage etc...

We use Frontline Plus and have for years. I know what you mean about the chemicals thing. But, it's either flea preventative, or fleas in your house. I'll take the Frontline. I only give it to my dogs March through November. Brewer's yeast is supposed to work! Dachsaholic uses it and so does Ernest T's mom. Hopefully they'll chime in soon!

We use Frontline Plus for fleas and ticks. However, we only use it every 2-3 months on the dogs which limits the chemical exposure. Sheila's my indicator as she is allergic to flea bites, so I watch her belly closely. Frontline Plus is waterproof, and you really don't need to use it once a month. We use it even less on the cats as they don't go outside much.

I take Sentinel but mom puts Frontline on me too. We go hiking a lot so that's why I get both. My cousins never go hiking but they get both too. They live in the town of Brownsburg but they have huge trees in their yard. I guess you just do whatever makes you feel good and safe.
Years ago mom had a house full of fleas and she promised that she would never go through that again. It's awful....plus your pet could get tapeworms from the fleas. Mom is only worried about the ticks when we are in the woods. It's the fleas that I can get at home 24/7.

Isn't Sentinel the one for both heartworm and flea/tick? I think it's what the Vet started Remus on when he was a puppy but it made him sick. So you're giving Daisy a double dose of flea/tick?

Zoe gets Frontline Plus from about April to September and the vet told me I could go longer than a month between applications. She has never had a flea or tick. We live in Indy, but there are quite a few trees and a wooded area close to us. We are going to the mountains of Georgia in the summer and I will make sure she has a frest application of the Frontline before we leave.

I forgot to mention that the cats are on Revolution. They only get it during flea season. They used to get nothing since they're indoor only, but last summer I found a flea on Cookie!! That was it! The dogs or even people can bring them inside. With so many furbabies, I'm just not taking any chances.

We use Frontline Plus and Interceptor because we like to hit the parks and trails AND our yard is pretty wooded, so we just don't want to take any chances. My sister lives in an area without many wooded areas and uses the Frontline Top Spot and Sentinel for her rottie because she's trying to avoid the extra chemicals in Frontline Plus. Neither of us have ever had any issues with fleas or ticks.

I have heard of garlic and yeast. But I do not know how much of each. It is something that I would also like to know.

We only get the garlic and yeast pills and so far, so good. Mom's been doing that way longer than any of us have been around and has never had fleas. We live up by Eagle Creek and have all kinds of wildlife walking through our yard. We also go to the park and to Holliday park and again no fleas or ticks. Soooooo, I'm going to have to say that it works splendidly. You can buy garlic and yeast at a feed store, pet store, or even Wal Mart and Target. The dosage will be listed on the bottle. Make sure you read that first to make sure that you're getting the right amount. The usual kind that we get is just a pill a day but mom got some kind awhile back that was a pill for every 5 pounds. We love the pills and we don't have garlic breath or anything. Chase got some of that flea stuff when they first got him but mom doesn't like to put more in us or on us than what we need. P.S. We're also on the 3 year vaccine plan. Don't let your vet trick you into thinking you can't do it:-)

Blitzen, that is what I am one and have been all my life. I don't have trouble with fleas. My Fe-Lion sisters take it too. I love the pills.

Sounds like that's what we'll try first. IF there's a problem, I'd probably use the Frontline spray as needed.
Good to know also that if we did ever use Frontline Plus, we'd go longer than a month inbetween applications. Thanks for all of the great advice!
