Yorkie breeders

Christina on Breeds - Fri, May 09 2008

Any Yorkie breeders out there? We want to get a Yorkie for our daughter, and I am having trouble finding REPUTABLE breeders.

I am sure that there are some Yorkie rescues out there. There are people who are MUCH more knowledgeable than I am who can direct you; We got our dog from a breeder (although next time, it is rescue all the way!) and I did a LOT of research. The AKC is a good place to start as are local breed specific groups. I know the White River Golden Retriever Club sent us a list of golden breeders in the midwest area; good luck!

I don't know of any breeders either. But, I think Petite Paws Rescue (http://www.petitepaws.org/) might have some little yorkie cuties! Good luck!

Why not rescue? Are you planning to show or breed the Yorkie that you get? If not, opt to adopt. Today there are 637 Yorkie or Yorkie mixes listed on Petfinder. When you get a dog from a shelter or rescue group, usually all the vet work is done before you even get them. Your adoption fee covers all the vaccines, spay or neuter, microchipping and many times teeth cleaning(if needed and Yorkies are notorious for bad teeth since they are so small). Petite paws rescue is a great place to start here in Indiana. If you don't see what you want, I'm sure you can do your paperwork and leave a request to be contacted if the dog you're looking for comes into rescue. How old is your daughter? Many times, very small dogs don't do well with small children. Small breed dogs can get scared, overwhelmed, or even mis-handled by young children. Also keep in mind that while you may be buying the dog for your daughter, you will probably be the one taking care of it(depending on her age and maturity)so make sure it's something that everyone in the house agrees to. Please opt to adopt and save a shelter dog's life. Thanks!

How old is your daughter? Will she be the one to vet the puppy or dog and get it S&N? Will she be the one to take care of it? How about if it gets sick will she be the one to pay for the medical costs? Will she be the one to feed and water the dog? and buy dog food etc? Usually giving puppies or dogs as a gift is a bad idea. It has to be a family decision. Remember getting a a puppy or a dog is a lifetime commitment. Dogs are living breathing animals. You just can't throw them in a toy box or a shelve if you get tired of them. Rachel

OMG Dreya, why in the world would you post that website?? All those little old decrepit dogs look like the rescue I had that died of heart failure!!! I have a serious soft spot for the oldies with missing teeth, cloudy eyes, and that do nothing but sit on your lap...I'm going to have to donate to them this year.....
