Mulch

Debbie on Health - Fri, May 09 2008

Our mulch is being delivered today and I'm so torn about putting it in our back yard around the deck. We're down to mud back there and I have lots of hostas I like to keep protected by mulch. After Mama M's post about a few dogs getting sick, I don't know if we should put it back there or not.

The mulch is not colored, just plain brown, cheap (sort of) mulch.

What should we dooooo???

Have you asked the seller for a list of ingredients? I know that at our local store, they had two kinds of mulch.. one that was all natural, and one that had the chemicals in it. Maybe you can find out which one they sold you?

I know the Cocoa mulch can be deadly for dogs. As far as the coloring or chemicals in it, I thought the problem was a bacteria that you wouldn't be able to tell whether it was in the mulch or not. Can you put a small fence around the mulch and plants to at least give them a visual barrier? For some dogs, that's enough for them to leave it alone.

I thought it was chemicals, but you're probably right about the bacteria. Clearly, we don't mulch :) Maybe contact your vet? Mine has always been helpful when I've had random household/pet safety questions..

I remember MM's post about the mycotoxin poisonings in her friend's dogs. Mycotoxins are produced by fungus, like the infamous toxic mold. Since mold spores are microscopic and pretty much everywhere, it is going to be hard to tell if your mulch is dangerous. Now, that I think about it, it might not have even been the mulch, it might have been a case of the dogs getting some wild/dangerous mushrooms (the weather this Spring made conditions perfect for 'shrooms). Ironically, the mulch that is treated with chemicals, like a fungicide, is more likely to prevent a bloom.

The guy just dropped it off. It's from Musselman's in Noblesville. We get it through our daughter's school. I'll see if they have a website and check it out.

You just NOW got your mulch??? There goes wanting to get the mulching done by the end of today. We get our mulch from the Geist Nursery. Apparently it's pretty tasty as Freckles loved to snack on it. And we all know _that_ didn't cause her downfall.

I was outside when the guy was dumping it out. It just kept comin' and comin' and comin'....oh man are we going to be bizzy!! I don't think that Kirby or Hoover ever ate the mulch in the past, but I know they dig in it. And poop in it. It's like their own personal litter box.

Especially those fresh shoots! OMG!! I ate about 7 of them a couple of weeks ago! Lola is getting in on the act, too. Mom is pretty ticked that I ate some. SO? I won't eat them when they're big! Just those juicy shoots. MMMMMmmmmmmMMM!

Yep, little Maggot, I agree with you! I was going to say that myself. First it's the hearing, then the mind...

Man, you guys have all the fun. I don't get to pull any stunts like that-- mommy's got me on a leash, so she can watch me like a hawk! No fair!

Wow it sounds like my family dog Callie really is missing out on some fun here. We always get mulch and she ignores it. No digging except when there was is fresh bunny scent though.
