Ban on Horse Racing?

Sarah on Activities - Wed, May 07 2008

After I heard the tragic euthanizing of Kentucky Derby runner-up Eight Belles after she broke both ankles, I was horrified.

I know its a long-standing tradition, but I think events like this should be banned. It's just a way for people to make money gambling. I really don't see anything prestigious about it.

What do you think about banning the sport?

I also want to know ... With today's modern technology, why is it that we cannot treat horses with injuries like this? Maybe some of you horse folks on here can better explain.

Article on Kentucky Derby that discusses the banning of the sport.

Thoroughbreds have delicate legs. They also don't have a lot of genetic diversity. But, they love to run. I think banning horse racing goes too far, but I also think there needs to be more accountability. The can't save them due to the way horses stand on their legs. I can't remember the specifics now, but when Barbaro broke his leg they had a lot on it. I was a horse crazy girl when Ruffian broke her leg in what was described as the Match Race of the Century. I had Ruffian memorials all over my bedroom.

This happens every time a horse gets injured. Look, they are athletes, and when athletes compete, injuries are a risk. But if they ban horse racing I don't know if it would make much of a difference. Do you know what horses do? They run. I do agree that the breeders are making them to light and nimble; they just aren't rugged anymore. The thing is, the evidence is before them that they're doing it wrong. Secretariat was probably the greatest racehorse of all time, and one of his granddams was a horse who was an endurance/distance racer. He had massive lungs and a heart to match. That's part of what made him and Sham, his cousin, so great.

Mommy had read an article about how the race horses now are being bread with large muscle mass in the shoulders but, the legs are too thin to support it. That is why things like this happen. I could see if the horse took a tumble or had an accident of some kind . Just to break both ankles while running makes me wonder. I don't believe in exploiting animals of any kind. If horses love to run, let them run free in the fields.

Eight Belles, poor girl had weak bones bred into her. It was in her blood line (grandfather and father I think) and nothing was done to stop it.
It reminded me of how sometimes certain dog breeds genetics carry over are not watched in the breeding process.
