Different House, Different Love

Petey on Behavior - Wed, May 07 2008

I find it interesting that my dogs, especially Petey, treat me differently when we are visiting my mom.

At home Petey rarely snuggles with me; he likes to walk around and do his own thing. But at my mom's house, he and Abby always compete for my attention. They both try to sit on my lap at the same time or sneak a seat when the other is not looking.

Why do you think that is?

Because you are in a different, not completely familiar place. We don't travel with our crew, so we don't have much experience with this, but from what i've heard from friends...your dogs' behavior isn't all that uncommon. Maybe they want to stick close to yu for fear that you will leave without them?

Zoe is like that when I visit my parents' house. She loves going to grandma and grandpa's house, but if I get out of her sight, she freaks out. I have left her there before when I went out of town, but she acted like this before that happened. Heaven forbid I walk outside for even a second, she is at the door pawing and crying like I am never coming back.

Deuce has done this before too. He doesn't do it any more when we're at my boyfriend's house or my parents' house. He's been to both of those homes a lot and is comfortable there. Francie, however, still sticks close at my parents' house. She hasn't been there enough to get comfortable yet.

I wish I could share the same experience, but our dogs seem to forget who we are when we're visiting my in-laws. Freckles used to glue herself to my mother in-law and follow her around the entire weekend. Maggie shakes her entire body in excitement just waiting for my father in-law to put on the throw blanket before she dives in to snuggle with him.
