Chinese Crested

Maraka on Breeds - Wed, May 07 2008

So we know that there are a few Chinese Crested dogs running around indy paws. Mom and i are going to meet one in the next couple of weeks, moms uber excited because this is a breed shes always wanted to meet but hasnt ever had the chance. I of course probably am just going to play with him/her. but we would like to know is there anything that we should know about this breed, like do they like to play, can mom pet it like a normal dog,i know mom is weird but she needs to know. She doesnt want to offend the dog or the owner! any suggestions would help my mom alot, shes kinda freaking out.

These are the dogs that don't have a lot of hair, right? I often wonder if they would be a good solution for people with allergies.

Jude is our resident Crestie. I'm fairly certain she really likes to play. Also, I would always ask the doggie's momma before you pet, but I don't think cresties are any different than other dog in the wanting petted depatment.

Most people bend down to pet me and then get a wierd look on their face...but I'm not offended and mom is used to it. And they typically "pat" me instead of stroking me like a dog with fur. I like my butt pat/scratched. Some Cresteds are very reserved and some are very playful, so it will really depend on the dog. I'm playful...I'm a clown really (I like to show off.....) We are hyperallergenic, even the powderpuff variety is. Crested's don't shed like retrievers or pugs for example, because their hair is like ours--it constantly grows....so when you brush it you'll get some hair, but you'll never have the clumps and clumps and clumps of hair in the brush. They are also a good dog for people with fibromialyga and people who are cold all the time....many hairless crested are used in therapy work, as are Mexican Hairless, for their warm body and good size....stuffing one under the covers is like having a mini heater or heated blanket. We are a special breed not like any other!

I met Jude a couple of months ago and she is great. She loves to be pet/scratched. She spent a lot of time in my lap that day. It was "weird" to pet a dog with no hair, but I got over it very quickly. I think they are great dogs, and great coversation topics!

My skin sister has a Chinese Crested and she is my best friend. We stay at the kennel together when the family goes out of town. She is very playful, and loves to have the humans stroke her head. If they stop, she will poke their hand until they start again. She is very smart, and has loads of personality. She prances like a pony and I bet that is how she got her name.
