Dog keeps throwing up!

Mikey on Health - Wed, May 07 2008

So, we have asked several vets and done a lot of research, but no one seems to know why our dog Cooper throws up about once a day. We've had his blood tested, and there's no major health problems. Has anyone experienced this?

Does he throw up his food or is it just acid like stuff? Remus has acid reflux and I give him a rolaid once in a while.

What are you feeding him? If he's eating regular pet store or grocery store food, you might want to try him on something that doesn't have any chemical preservatives, artificial colors, antibiotics, and is made from human-grade ingredients.

When I was having tummy problems and vomiting, it turned out that i had acid reflux, like Teri mentioned. My vet said for Mom to give me a Pepcid everyday for 2 weeks and I was all better! Does Cooper tend to throw up at any certain time of the day? I was usually sick in the morning because of laying down all night.

Yes, Cooper usually throws up in the morning, unless we give him water right away... then he sometimes vomits in the afternoon. He throws up stomach bile, not food. We'll try to pepcid and see if that works. You only gave it to him for 2 weeks? Thanks for the reply!

What food do you suggest? He's a large breed, White German Shepherd.

Have you tried California brand? when we were looking at different foods, i looked it up on dogfoodanalysis.com it had 4 stars, and was recommended for dogs with sensitive stomachs. If you go to pet supplies plus, you can try out different foods - returning any that your dog doesn't like as long as the bag is half full and it is within 30 days. I know PSP carries California.

I used to throw up a couple of times a week...Then someone told my Mommy to stop giving me cheese in case it was what was making my stomach icky. Sure enough I'm doing much better...but I miss my cheese. Darn that feller for telling my mom to cut me off;)

Did they check fecal for worms I assume? It can make them throw up. Also Giardia, many vets don't check fecal for that, but it can cause the dog to throw up frequently.
