eating the feet

Jen on Health - Tue, April 29 2008

ok, so Maraka has been acting awfully weird latley. a couple of weeks ago when it was nice out i opened the blinds and she sat and layed in the sun in the bedroom. she started licking the carpet. hmmm, well, she has stopped doing that, i assumed my feet wernt there so she wanted to lick something. but latley when she comes inside or gets out of her bath she will sit there and eat on her feet chew on them lick them ect. yes its irritating but im more worried about if something is wrong. any suggestions?

Sounds like allergies. She may be allergic to all of the pollen floating around now. Hoover gets like this in late summer because he's allergic to ragweed. I'd take her to your vet and confirm this, though. There are anti-histamins for dogs, just like for people!

When we lived at the apartment complex, Deuce would start chewing his feet shortly after they treated the lawn with its first spring treatment. Since I moved to a house this year, I have not had the yard treated and he's not been chewing on his paws at all. He has, however, been goopey-eyed and itching his butt and legs. I give him chlorpheneramine (1/2 pill) if it gets too bad. Otherwise, he's fine. I did, however, have the vet check him out first.

Probably allergies. I'd taken Eddie to teh vet for it, and the vet said it was allergies w/ grass. So, she said when it bothers him a lot to give him a benadryl. We don't do it very often, but when he's chewing a lot we will.

I'm a feet chewer too when my allergies are bad. Maybe wipe the paws off when she comes in and change to non-soap shampoo (for allergies). There's always the food considerations too. But definately talk it over with your vet - simple benadryl can help.
