Basset Ears

RIP Freckles on My Blog - Wed, April 16 2008

Okay, Basset friends, My mom was wondering how clean are your ear flaps? During my impromptu bath, Mom cleaned my big floppy ears and peeled off this big chunk of matted fur from the part of my ears that are closest to my jowls. It's where water and slobber cling onto the fur.

Mom was just cleaning out the tub and found the big chunk. It was like picking up a big nasty piece of jello in a tub of water. Ewwww.

Mom usually plucks the chunks off but has been slackin' off lately. It doesn't help that I'm constantly slobbering with Grandpa being here.

It's because you have an awesome grampa who feeds you those biscuits by the handful! Do you think he'd like a corgi?

Well I am a beagle but my ears get pretty icky sometimes. About once a year (sometimes more) Mom has to take me to the vet for a Cortisone shot because my ears are stinky from allergies. Us hound dogs do love to slobber don't we?

Jersey Joe's mom did a really good job de-goobering my ears when I went to see her. Mom? Not so much...such an amateur.

We've never had the matted fur problem but Mama is always cleaning my ears. Usually with cotton balls, they get really dirty. She'll keep an eye on the flaps. They are usually the cleanest part.

HI HI HI FRECKLES!

When I first came to live with my forever family they didn't know a lot about bassets or basset ears. Boy did I give them a crash course. Mom came home one day and my ears had stunked up the whole house. Mom said it smelled like rotten cheese and she had to open all the windows. I didn't have no matted fur or nothing, just needed a good cleaning. The next day I got to go to the groomers, YAY ME!

Since then mom uses her biped's baby wipes once a week and some solution from the doctor to clean me and Maggie's ears! I love ear cleanings when they rub them, ahhhhhhh

Thanks Basset boys and girls! The insides of my ears can be pretty gross, but it's the OUTSIDE goobers that gross my mom out! Ya know, the part that gets wet from drinking, slobbering, and especially post-rawhide chewing! It's the strip of my ear closest to my mouth. Mom hates that matted fur there! I'm sure you can see them in a few of my photos. Anywhooo...is it dinner time yet?

When Lucy is playing rough with me, she sometimes gets too much of a grip on my ears. Mom found a scab or two on the insides of my ears. Other than that, I usually just have a few crusty pieces at the very end. I end up dipping my ears in the drinking water and cleaning the bottoms.

I'm not much of a drooler, so I don't have the crusty problem. Linus also is obsessed with licking my face and ears, so I stay pretty clean around there. My undercarriage is another story...
