My poor baby. :'(

Veronica & Eddie on Health - Tue, April 15 2008

When I went and picked up Madison from her spay yesterday she was completely out of it. As soon as she saw me, she just started crying. Her usually wriggly, barely controllable energy was maybe one-tenth of its normal level. She calmly walked out of the clinic with me with out even pulling. A real shocker.

I had brought her crate with me just in case she was hyper so she wouldn't hurt herself bouncing around the car, but her depressed state told me it would be okay for her to ride up front with me and my friend.

On the way home she started heaving. I pulled off the exit ramp on 65S and carefully held out a piece of paper for her to be sick in. It was bright yellow bile. I thought it just might be carsickness, because she has thrown up in the car before, and it was a long drive. I put her back in her crate and drove home the rest of the way.

When we got here, she didn't want any water, like the clinic staff said she needed. I even tried an ice cube, but she ignored it. She didn't drink any water for the rest of the night, and even ignored a treat we offered her. She vomited three or four more times over the span of the night. We finally ended up putting her in her crate because we didn't want to chance her doing it on the bed. Eddie said he heard her lapping up some water after we put her in her crate.

This morning I took her out but she still seems kind of in this depressed phase. I offered her food and fresh water but she didn't want either. I gave her an icecube and she did eat most of that. She also ate a small treat after she had her morning potty. She hasn't vomitted again yet, but I did see vomit on her crate towel from last night...

Should I as worried as I am? I was hoping spaying her would help tone-down her attitude, not totally erase it! I think if she continues not eating by this evening I will offer her some cheese. And if it's still going like this tomorrow, I am going to call the clinic.

I have heard all these stories of dogs bouncing right back from being altered, but it seems it was a little harder on my Maddie. I am scared for her. :(

Oh gosh, I'd be calling the vet just to make sure. I didn't have Deuce or Francie when they were altered, so I don't have any experience with this. But, we love Princess Maddie and hope she bounces back quickly. Please keep us posted and we'll say some prayers for her.

Oh gosh....we'll say a few prayers for her too. Maybe she's had a reaction to the anesthesia, which sometimes does cause throwing up....but maybe a call to the clinic to be sure. Poor Maddie....and you too....we'll be thinking of you all.

I would contact your vet if she isn't responding well this evening. Some dogs are more sensitive to anesthesia (sp?) than others and Maddy may be one of those. Hope she feels better soon!

Poor Maddie! I think I would call the clinic just to make sure, but I think this is fairly normal. I wouldn't worry to much unless it continues past today. Again, I think I would call just for the peace of mind.....I hope Princess Maddie gets better soon!

I got to see Madison last night! She is soooo adorable!! (I clean cages at FACE on Monday evening.) I went in and she seemed a little scared, but she warmed up as soon as I started petting and loving on her. I even got some kisses! I would call and speak with someone at FACE, just for peace of mind. Beverly acted the same way the whole evening after her spay, but the next day she was back to her old self. I've been wondering how she is doing. I hope she feels better soon. She is such a sweet baby.

Charlie took 3 days after his neuter to perk up. Some dogs don't react well to the anethesia. Also, the poor babies do hurt for a while until things heal up. Like the others, I'd call to be sure. We'll keep Maddie in our thoughts!

Poor little Madison! Little dogs heal differently than larger ones. Is she on pain meds? Ojo was really groggy acting & vomiting when she was on them so we took her off (with vet advise). She took a lot longer to heal up than Roo did. We had to keep Roo down / calm as she wanted to run right away.

Aww, poor gal. I'd definately call the vet, but I'm also pretty sure it's normal. Eddie vomited twice on the ride home (I took him to a vet that was further away, but was the best...) I think you're doing everything right, you're trying to get her to eat/drink, and you're keeping an eye on her. Give her a few days and she'll be back to her peppy self. Much to my dismay, Eddie still humped things after a few days, so that whole thing about it "calming them down" may not be true after a few days!

Thank you so much for taking the time to give her extra lovin's. :) Your lucky all you got was kisses. When I was filling out the paperwork to check in, a nurse came over to say hi and Madison climbed up her and peed on her. I was so embarassed. :X Haha

I didn't get any pain meds for her because the people at FACE said to only get them if it is necessary. She doesn't seem to be really agonizing or anything. Just sort of listless and relaxed.

Poor baby. Lola was out of it for about 2 days after her spay. She wasn't sick, though. That can take a lot out of a little dog. She probably is very uncomfortable, does FACE not give out pain meds routinely? I did give Lola Rimadyl twice and that seemed to help her feel much better. I'd call your vet in the morning if she's not a little perkier.

UPDATE: Madison ate a couple ice cubes today and drank a little water. We made steak for dinner so I poured some drippings onto her kibble and that did the trick. She ate about 3/4 of a cup. We also gave her JUST A LITTLE steak. :)

She is still kind of low on energy, but she hasn't vomitted at all today. And the fact that she's gotten water and food in her tummy is comforting.

Thank you to all the IP users that posted words of wisdom and caring. :)
