I live out in the country with a little over 2 acres of land surrounded by cornfields. We have a fairly large house, about 2300 sq. ft, with a full basement. When we first looked at the house, I told my husband that it was too big for us, but he disagreed. We bought the house and now have filled it with LOTS of critters. We aren't going to have human children so I guess we decided to fill our 4 bedroom house with dog cages and food dishes, lol. My husband wants to get a mini-donkey and some chickens, but I have put my foot down on those animals.
WE live on a busy street on the NE side of Indy. There are no covenants. I hate covenants that tell you what kind of fence you can have, how many animals, what to do with your animals, etc. We have about 3/4 of an acre, mostly in back, and have had as many as 4 dogs at one time. The cats all stay inside for obvious reasons. The only time we have ever gotten a complaint was shortly after we moved in 20 years ago. We got a postcard addressed to "New Neighbor" in neatly printed block script. When we turned it over it said "Dead dogs don't bark." Not a happy day at the Muttblood household. The guy who lived next door at the time was somewhat reclusive and paranoid, and we believe that he sent it. We never left our dogs out by themselves for a long time. He moved out shortly afterward thank Dog. Other than that it's a very live and let live neighborhood.
We have 2 dogs and 2 cats. We live on the near east side of indy with ~1/2 acre of property (we were lucky to be able to get the empty lots on both sides of the house). The dogs go out back on 30+ foot tie outs. The cats stay indoors except when on leashes. We also have a 2,000 sq ft house wich allows for ample play space indoors.
My hubby, 10 yr. old daughter, me and 6 furkids like in an older subdivision in Carmel with a HUGE fenced in yard. The dogs love it and so do we!! We have awesome neighbors who all have dogs, too. My kitties say inside always. Our house is spacious and there are plenty of places for everyone to have their "space".
mom said everyone should come to your house. :) she said to tell your hubby that i can act like a chicken. my nose is in the ground ALL the time! :)
We live in a subdivision with the worst possible lot ever. We can't put a fence up although hubby managed to cobble together one this weekend with some green garden fencing. Our house isn't all that big either. The master bedroom has a row of 4 crates up against the wall with the window. It's very cozy and I'd have more if I could. Freckles the horse is boarded elsewhere. I would love to have an older home with a lot of land but hubby had this built before I met him. Now we've got to stay a few more years so we wouldn't lost money on it. I think if you really want more animals, you make the room. Jerry didn't have any animals until he married me:-)
Can you tell me where you got this info? When we've turned in the puppy mill lady, we have been told there is no limit to the # of dogs you can have. This comes from AC and they've told her the same thing. They only have to have crates big enough to stand and turn around in, appear to be healthy and disease free. According to them, you can have as many as you want. I would love to find something legally that they could cite her for. Too bad those provisions don't include emotional health along with the physical health.
I think our house is around 900 square feet. It's pretty small, three small bedrooms. We've got the two pups and one foster pup and we have our three kitties. We have a little over a half an acre surrounded by corn and bean fields. We don't have any human kids so our furbabies get the run of the house! Three dogs, at least one cat and two humans in a queen sized bed, I can feel the love...or is that Penelope's nose? Edit: Josh says our house is about 1150 square feet.
Rhonda, you have exactly what my husband and I were looking for. Man, how much fun would Carolina have with 2 acres! Currently we are in an older subdivision with a decent sized, but irregularly shaped, muddy, muddy back yard. Our animal farm status is suspect as we currently only have Carolina, but we have always been a two dog family in the past and we will be so again, very soon.
Believe me, we searched for about 9 months before we found this house. It is in rural Carroll County, which is where we were looking, but way in another direction. When the realtor brought it to our attention, we actually had to google the small town it was near cause we had never heard of it! Anyway, my husband wanted more land, but we had to be realistic. This house was in our price range, PLUS it already had a fenced in backyard. HUGE bonus because we already had 2 dogs at the time. Anyway, I LOVE my house but have learned to put my foot down to some animals, like the mini-donkey and chickens, because we just don't have the space. lol
What town is it? I'm from Delphi...LOOOOONG time ago.
I've heard of both. In another place we lived, we had a Frankfort address, Rossville schools, and Geetingsville (I think) phone it does get to be ridiculous!
Many apologies, my information is dated (guess I'm getting old). The code used to define a kennel as more than 5 dogs. However, in the new language (revisions prompted by the dog bite incidents), Kennels are no longer defined by number of animals, but by purpose. All of the Marion County Ordinances are linked from the MCACC website (which of course I forgot to copy before typing this). Again, my apologies
Don't forget about that t-shirt I have that says "He said it was him or the animals. We miss him sometimes."
Hi guys,
I live on the eastside of Indy. With 2 white shepherds, a husky mix, 3 pugs, and 6 cats. Oh, yes we also have 2 rats. My house is just under 1000 sq feet. My lot is about 1/2 an acre. I have a large fenced in back yard. The cats are always inside. The dogs are only outside when someone is home to keep an eye on them. So it is very zoo like here! Couldn't be without my furkids!
We're technically 2 over the HOA limit so we try not to draw attention to ourselves. We have 1200 sq feet no kids, 2 cats, 2 dogs, our fence doesn't go the whole length of the yard because there is a dip in the back that fills with water when it rains and I just really didn't want soaking dogs all the time. As it is they rule the kitchen, we're removed the table so they have plenty of space. For real instensity we take them to the dog park. They also think the couches are like a playground, its amusing to watch.
Mom and Dad says we are very spoiled. We have 6 acres and have run of the whole place. We have invisible fence and can tromp over the whole area. In the summer momma has cows to eat some of the pasture down, so when they are here we are shut out of some of the fields. We still have plenty of room to play ball. We also have run of the entire house and sometimes sleep with mom and dad. We are rotten.
We're jealous! MOM...can you imagine our yard tripled?! Then Dad could have his chickens and mini-donkey....
That sounds like my dream. I can't wait until I live in the country, with tons of land and neighbors who live far away. That's my heaven. Right now, we've got three people and three dogs in a two-bedroom, fairly small house. Somehow, we manage to accommodate everyone, but sometimes it feels strained.
