Very Scary: Dognapping on the Rise

PWDMOM on Activities - Thu, April 10 2008

This was posted another dog msg board that I am on.

That is why I don't leave my dogs outside when I leave the house. I always have an watchful eye on them. Even when I am inside the house and they are outside. I still have a view on them.

I'm with you. I always keep a close watch on Daisy. There are times when she is behind the garage or in the carport and I can't see her. Panic comes over me when she doesn't come when I call...she has selective hearing. I listen for the sound of her dog tags. Sooner or later she appears.
We are a pair...she comes in to check on me and I go out to check on her.

I know it is scary. I posted this last week after an Indy Paws member was nervous about traveling with her dog and leaving her pet in the car when she took bathroom break. I get nervous because on nice days I have had to leave my dogs outside because they refuse to come in the house and I try everything and all they do is run from me.

I stand outside while my girls are out and watch them constantly. Beverly can jump the fence. She hasn't tried in some time, but she can do it. So, be it snow, rain or ice, I am out there while they are.

That's one of the reasons why I don't want a doggie door in my new house. I would be devestated if someone took my babies.

I am the one who posted about travelling with Zoe. I am still very afraid to leave her in the car for fear of someone snatching her. You would have to put me in a padded room if someone stole my baby!!
Diane, aren't the sound of jingling doggy tags the best thing? I know people who are annoyed by the sound, but to me it is just reassurance that Zoe is safe and near.

I never leave mine in the backyard unwatched due to neighborhood concerns. I'm honestly not so worried about them in the car. First, they have to get past the car security. Then, not many people want to try to tackle 100 pounds of snarling furballs with 2 sets of teeth and 8 sets of claws in a confined space, defending their territory. Also, I have larger mutts which makes them far less appealing to any thief.

Yes...love those dog tags.
When we travel, we never leave Daisy alone in the car. We have a Jeep Wrangler that has a soft top. One good rip and she would be gone. We take turns going to the restrooms and we have lots of carry out food.

It is so maddening when they don't come when called. I have an almost 100% rate of Maddie and Sydney coming on the first call because I ALWAYS reward them for coming to call. If they come on the first time, they get a small treat. They don't care if it's small, it's a treat. If they come on the 2nd or 3rd call they still get praise and petting. It may be bribery, but I always want them to come when called, and the only way to guarantee that is if you make what you have more interesting than what they are doing. Try it and see if it helps. And, yes, the sound of dog tags is SO anxiety lowering!

I'm going to try that. Deuce and Francie LOVE the new back yard and I have trouble getting them back inside sometimes. I have some training treats at home and will work with them on that. Thanks, Mama Muttblood!

I don't need when called. I am velcroed to my mommy. I don't like being outside when my mommy is not there. When she goes into the house, I sure to follow. Its my brother Trajan that she has an hard time to get in. When she runs errands. My brother does not want to come in. So my mommy has to trick him to come inside.

Barks,
Nico

Hubby and I were just talking about this because Carolina likes to survey her domain too much for me to be outside with her the whole time. My neighborhood is pretty quite, the fence is sturdy and high with a gate that is hard to open unless you know how (very frustrating even for me sometimes) and Carolina would bark her head off if anyone approached our yard. And we never leave her in the yard if we aren't home.
