Tuxedo talking?

Mama Muttblood^..^ on Activities - Tue, April 08 2008

Happy TnT Tuesday, everybody. Sorry in advance that this is such a long post, but I am fascinated by this behavior. Although I have had cats most of my life, I have never had a cat like Denny Crane. I have told you how loving he is, and that is apparently a Tuxedo cat trait. The past several weeks he has started "talking" to me every night. He starts out on the bed with Papa M, Luna and me, then after about 10 minutes, he jumps down and leaves the room. He used to just "talk" and sometimes thump things around somewhere else in the house, then return to bed. I could hear this activity, but didn't think a whole lot about it until his "talking" got closer and closer to the bedroom. He makes these chirping, chirrupping vocalizations in a very conversational tone. The other night he dragged Maddie's sacred cow, the one she uses to shake when the coffee grinder is going, into the bedroom, dropping it on my side of the bed, then proceeded to sit on the floor and give me a whole discourse about his adventure. I talked to my crazy friend Carolyn who has had LOTS of cats in her life, and she said he was killing something and bringing it to me as a love token. The "talking" is just further indication of his devotion to me. Well, I thought this was pretty crazy, but he does it EVERY night now. Not always with a killed object, but always the leaving of the bed, then returning a few minutes later to "talk" to me. I have taken to making encouraging comments when he pauses in conversation, and this prolongs our little chats. It has gotten to be so routine that Papa M nudges me when Denny jumps down, then wakes me up if I have had the audacity to drift off before Denny gets back to talk to me. No other cat I have ever had has done this. Do other cats come in and talk with you nightly? Do you have any idea what they are talking about?

Baby sometimes talks. Usually she's looking for Ernest to play with her. If we know Denny, he's discussing Scotch and Cigars ;0). He's a pretty cool dude. It's like you two were destined to be a family.

That's sweet - Denny sounds like a character. My kitty Buster loves to chat as well. We have conversations daily and I love it! Enjoy your night time chats...

I talk to mom every night when it's time for treats. I literally say, "Mama" and we go back and forth until I get my Temptations. She needs to tape me doing this. I know how adorable I am.

I come into bed every night and purr to mom and dad. I kind of sound like I'm "back purring". Kind of like purring while inhaling. This is my ultimate purr of contentment.

um, hello. Denny Crane is a lawyer and they like to talk alot. He's probably keeping you informed of all the IndyPaws cases he's taken on.

Denny Crane is the coolest cat I've ever met! I just love him!

It could just be you and your interaction w/ him. My mom's cats use to talk to her all the time, I swear they had entire conversations. She was forced to get rid of them for personal reasons, but they talked to her constantly.

Maybe I will try striking up a conversation with Kinky. She's kind of vocal. Chaka is too, but he whines and I hate to reinforce that.

I talk all the time. Mostly it's back talking mom though. When she tells me no I just keep on going.

Bailey used to talk to me at night in bed. It wasn't like a meow sound it was more like a hmm sound. He always done that while he was purring. Then with Gracie she does it all the time. If we wake her up she starts talking. We had one seven years ago but when he was outside he would come up to the side of the window and actually started saying hello. One time he got stung by a bee and he started saying hewwo help. We still talk about him saying that.

I'm a talker, too. Most evenings, when Mom and Dad are in bed, I will begin my chirping, meowing, louds purrs, etc. It is so hard to explain the noises I make. I did sacrifice a spider to Mom once and chirped the whole way to her (she wasn't happy about the spider but praised me anyways). I just bring toys in now. Mom loves it when I start chatting. I am a quiet kitty during the day and chatter in the evening or when I want to play with Mom or Dad. The more I read about Denny Crane, the more I want to be a tuxedo cat, too! Oh well, I will continue to be happy being a stripey kitty.

Wow Mama M you have almost perfectly described my Kiernan. Every night as soon as all the lights go out (that is a key) he will walk around the apartment talking. He always ends his walk in the bedroom, and he also always ends by bringing a toy to the bedroom. It is actually kinda annoying but if this is a way to show affection I will stop telling him "it's time to go to bed please be quiet." It's funny to wake up in the morning to have 3 different toys strewn across the bed and floor. This is also the only time he talks, but it is very consistent. I am so shocked that someone else's cat also does this!!!

Boomer chirps too, but I guess I was too dense to consider it "kitty talk." Mainly, he chirps during about the ten minutes once I arrive home and when I exit the bathroom. I have no idea what he is saying, but I guess it's some form of bonding. I do envy you in the fact that Denny brings in a "kill." Boomer has never done such a thing.

Both Alvin and foster Ziggy are 'talkers' in the sense they've got a ton of funny meows/chirps/other sounds that they make at various times. Alvin's are the funniest though... he'll get up on the dining room table with his front paws on a chair and start making this weird meow/chirp noise while staring upwards. Methinks he's trying to contact Ceiling Cat?

Bridgette has talked to Beck and I for several years now,I just wish we knew what she was saying, she gets very excited if we don't say something back to her, and these coversations can last for several minutes. She is the only one of our 5 dogs that does this.

Amanda - yes, I do that, too! Waking up with random toys in bed is how I keep mom and dad on their toes! There is always something to play with.

my loki just meows at me when he's excited about something. he chatters like he's barking, but he only does that when he's hungry or talking to the dogs. i'll talk to him and he does his cute little meow :) he's the sweetest.

I had not thought about it until last night, but I was reading in bed, and he kept staring at me, finally jumped down and left the room. Then came back a few minutes later and stared again. I realized he was waiting for me to turn the lights out! What's up with that? He's never done it any other time except when the lights are out at night!

I do that, but usually when I'm home alone. My owner takes my feather toys and distributes them around the house, and then I find them and take them into the bedroom, and then I usaully leave them with the feathers in an X formation, and I always get praised when they come home and see. Occasionally, I will bring them into a room that my owners are in, and when I do, I'm making odd kitty noises
when the feather toys are still in my mouth.

That is totally cute. I used to have a cat that would make little chirruping noises like that, but they seemed more like love quips, like when he laid in bed with me and I pet him. Once he even gave me a hug. He was laying next to me and just wrapped his arms around me and squeezed. lol He also 'barked.' We had a birdfeeder hanging directly in front of the kitchen window for him to watch and he would sit and making this barking noise at the birds. Too cute. I wish we had a kitty. :(
