*gag* LET'S GO MOM! *cough*

Madison♄ on Activities - Sun, April 06 2008

Mom decided that since today was so beautiful, we would take a walk with dad at our favorite park... I LOVE THE PARK! So much to see, so much to smell, the sun shining, the birds singing... Just one problem. Mom and dad don't like to walk as fast as I do. I pull and pull and pull until I start gagging. Mom says tells me to stop and stops walking. I wait for us to walk again. Then I pull. Mom tells me to stop, I'm being bad, the gagging sounds are embarassing. We stop. We walk again, and I pull again. Mom said we will have to work on this because it is out of control. Dad got annoyed, and we didn't even get to go on the second loop of the trail. We just came home. Mom found some info on training against leash pulling on the internet here: http://www.perfectpaws.com/leash.html

Does anyone have any other tips for mom to teach me some leash manners?

Keep that advice coming, because I get cabin fever in the house all the time! I need trips to the park!

Love,
Princess Madison

Hm. If your mom finds anything that will work for you, let my mom in on it. She has tried EVERYTHING to keep me from pulling. The only time I DON'T pull is when I'm walking by myself with mom and there are no other dogs, bikes or people around. So, not real often.

Mom cured us by getting us a harness and a 26' retractable leash. We went to the park today! There were lots of people, dogs, & kids! Mom says we were really good, but Remus got so out of shape over the winter we had to cut it short! She says we'll go more often and get him back in shape!

Mom's had pretty good luck using the gentle lead harness, and a technique I DON'T like. If the "tree" thing doesn't work (it does most of the time since this harness actually makes you stop and look at mom), she'll start walking again. Then, just as I pull, she turns around a walks the other way! I get the message pretty quickly and behave (for a while). Sheila doesn't pull at all now, so I guess it will probably work on me, eventually.

Ellie is sooo strong, she used to really pull me down the street, my feet were barely touching the ground! So, I've done a variety of things. 1 - take a squirt gun with you. When Madison starts to pull, squirt her with water. 2. - I found that the tree thing only works if I make Ellie actually turn around and come back to me. I think I did this with a treat. Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly how this worked. I think I stood there, asked her to come and gave her the treat. Now, when she pulls and I "tree" she immediately comes back to me so I will start walking. If we haven't been on a walk for a awhile, it takes a couple of walks to get her back in the swing of things. 3. - we also used the gentle leader. worked like a charm. I hope these help~ Good luck!
