I agree! We rescued our Basset from HSI...she had multiple owners, and now I know why. She has multiple health issues, and I am confidant that she is the product of a backyard breeder. If I had it to do all over, I'd still take her home...I know she would not have lived long had she not been adopted by someone with a medical background...it was a sign that she be rescued, and I was to be her mommy.
i'm with you kirby! it is frustrating if people do it for the wrong reasons- I myself was found as a stray outside an Amish puppy mill. Yes, the Amish have mills and they are awful! My mommy thinks I also may have been abused because I can be so skittish (although still loving and sweet). She also says that she'd never want the responsibility of having to care for a pregnant dog, let alone find good homes for the puppies. yikes! that's just too much work! it's best left to the pros. my motto: rescues rule!
Bark! =)
AGREED!!!! i kinda feel like i'm beating a dead horse today with all the people posting about wanting to breed their dogs!!! :::sigh::: makes me crazy!! all my animals are rescues, mostly, all by chance (except stuart, whom was a planned adoption from petsmart). i adopted joe because i was already in SAR, and was planning on getting one anyhow. i thought long and hard about getting one that was one year old, as i knew i'd have more challenges ahead of me, as far as training him for SAR, and just regular doggie issues.he wasn't even potty trained, as, sadly, he'd lived his life in a kennel outdoors.(many people tried to talk me out of getting him, and instead, getting a young pup)well, i am SO GLAD i took him!! he is just a wonderful working dog, and also a wonderful pet and companion!! i'd do the same thing if i had it to do over. i know nothing of his background, other than he came from georgia, and i do plan on having a pen-hip done on him (hip x-ray) in the next year, just to know what his hips look like. i do not want to put him through any pain, because he will work till he drops. that is how bloodhounds are. i just pray that the BYB that he likely came from had some decent hounds they bred to get him, because i want him to live a long time, working or not. i do have some more informative links on breeding, or why NOT to breed....i may post them in the next few days.
I agree with you too Kirby!! I am a purebred boxer but I got spayed right away because, although my momma thinks I am the cutest and sweetest puppy, and that there should be lots of me to go around, I am by no means the breed standard. This is what my momma thinks if anyone cares...
Breeding dogs should only be done to perpetuate a specific breed standard. The whole point of breeding is to produce a litter that is of show stock...not to make cute puppies. The parents should have multiple champions in their lines, and you should certainly know the pedigree of a dog before you even consider breeding. Also, I know that the cost to do all the health testing for boxer is pretty steep. We have lots of problems like heart disease, hip problems, cancer, etc. All of these thing have specific tests that are not included in a typical vet check...but MUST be done before breeding to ensure a healthy litter. Not to mention the fact that something could always go wrong during birth and the pregnancy and could end up rather costly and very time consuming. My momma thinks there is nothing wrong with someone who has the knowledge, money, time, and right dogs to breed. And she knows so many people love their dogs and want more exactly like them. But like everyone is saying, there are lots of us doggies who are sad and homeless because people get a cute purebred puppy for Christmas, and then some circumstance comes up and away they go. So even though you think you have sent your dog to a good home, you never know.
Just a side note...perhaps there should be a rule that people cannot post anything that has to do with looking for a stud service/bitch to breed with...don't know if that is possible but it is just a thought...
