Penelope vs. Fertilizer

dreya on Behavior - Thu, April 03 2008

I have had my nephew all week because of spring break. So we are here at my house today. Penelope had to go out to poo and she doesn't like going on a leash. So when she has to poo, she goes on the tie-out. I stand at the door while she does it and then she comes back in.

Well, today I had let her out, was standing at the back door and JR (my neph.) needed a drink (he's sick). I grabbed his apple juice and took it to him. When I came back to the door (10-15 SECONDS later) she was gone. The tie-out cable had snapped. There's even little wire cables in there. Didn't make a difference. I freaked out. Ran inside and grabbed the treat jar. Went outside shaking the jar and hollering for her. She was no where in sight. I ran out to the road and saw a man and a dog waaaay down the road. I ran back inside, told JR to jump in the car and we bolted down the road.

I could tell about half way there, it was her. She was following the guy, a neighbor. When I got closer I hollerd "Penelope!" and she started running toward the car. I stopped, opened the door and was about blown back by the smell.

Note: Yesterday when I was coming home, I could tell they had just fertilized the fields, it's a lovely bouquet here during springtime.

SOOOO, Penelope had gone for a romp in the field. She was COVERED. Chunks of poo were falling off of her. All this lovely grey and brown gunk. That stuff smells more chemical-y than poop-y; probably because it is. It was awful. I had to have my neighbor drive my car back to the house while I walked her home.

I took her right inside to the bathroom and scrubbed her as best I could. She still stinks. We are going to have to give her another bath tonight.

I just can't beleive how far away she got in that short time. I can't even imagine if it was a minute or two, she would have been out of the county!

I wish I would have taken a picture of her. I just wasn't thinking about that at the time. I had a long talk with her, she licked my face and had that "sorry, Ma" look on her little face.

Sorry Ma. I didn't mean to scare you. That stuff just smells so good and I wanted to play!

Oh, that's funny!!! Penelope likes to roll in the poopy fertilizer!!! I think you need to change her name to Poopnelope...teehee...

Seriously though, glad you weren't hurt, Lady P. Don't do that to your mama again.

Penelope, that's so unladylike. Are we going to have to remove the "Lady" from your name?

Mama's been calling me "Poopy P" today...don't give her any more ideas! She also keeps saying, "wait till your Pa comes home!" Uh-Oh.

You might try a "concoction" that our vet told us to use. Use 1 squirt of dishsoap, 1-2 cups baking soda, and 1-2 cups of peroxide. You can use that with your soap or as your soap. It helps with horrible odors (skunk, etc.). Hope that helps !! Good Luck !!

THANK YOU!!! We will try that. I really scrubbed her down too and she still stinks.

Mmmmm, I'll bet you smell mah-velous... Can I come over and roll in that? OH, we're glad you didn't get too far. Running away gives out moms heart attacks. Probably shouldn't do that anymore.

Ewww! Sounds like something my big sis, Sheila, would do. So far, I've not been a roller. Not sure she needs to get rid of the "Lady" part of the name. I like the sound of Lady P U. However, she does need to stay home. Mom had to go to wolf tie-outs for Sheila, and she only weighs 50 lbs!

It is soo scary when they get out of the yard! I HATE that! I'm glad she is back safe and sound, even though she is smelly.

Just be cautious with the peroxide -- in the eyes directly can blind your girl.
