Abby on Activities - Tue, March 25 2008

If you have a dog that tears through your house, jumps over furniture, and wants to go out running every chance he gets, you just may have an athlete yearning to reach his potential!

Does your dog have any athletic ability? Abby can catch treats mid-air with no problem ... if I could only channel it into catching frisbees.

Describes me to a "T". That's why mom wants me to do agility. I LOVE to jump and run. Thanks for the Article.

I totally believe more people would be happier with their dogs if they did some kind of activity. You get to bond with your dog, your dog has more focus and you get to meet some fabulous people. I love training with Batman. Before I started Schutzhund training, The Bat was a terror. He tore up things, tore through the house, etc. He is a much nicer dog now.

When Madison gets older we are DEFINITELY looking into agility classes. I heard its not good for puppies until about 2 years of age because of joint strength and such... I got her a frisbee the other day. She ended up cracking it in half and chewing it into shredded plastic instead of trying to catch it. Haha.

We would have been carted off to the looney bin if we hadn't gotten Maddie into a bunch of different busy activities. Her energy and ability to outsmart people would have brought most folks to their knees without some outlet. If you don't have a lot of money for training in some of these activities, just getting a good book of dog tricks and working with your dog every day helps them focus and gets ride of some of their pent up energy. Plus it is absolutely the best way to bond with them!

oh boy, i sure would not have gotten a bloodhound if i hadn't have had his "activity" already planned out, LOL. jasper and mikey also really were better off for doing obedience, and then SAR....it keeps their brains, as well as their minds, busy. a tired dog is a good dog!!! ;o)
