Royal Canin - Opinions

Anne on Nutrition - Mon, March 24 2008

I'm switching my dog's food b/c he doesn't really seem to like it. I tried Royal Canin on the advice of a few vets and he is chowing it down - in fact, he's picking out those pieces and leaving his old kibble in the bowl. Just wondering if anyone had any opinions, good or bad before I fully committed to the switch.

I had Zoe on Royal Canin Special for about a year and she seemed to like it, but recently I have changed her food after reading the rating they gave Royal Canin on

Maybe you should look at the site and see what they say about the specific formula you are feeding your dog. It changed my mind.

While not the best food out there, it's all my Charlie will eat (he's a fickle old guy). It's a little better than Science Diet if you have to go the prescription route, but if not... there are better quality foods out there to choose from. All my other hairballs eat a Wellness/Innova mixture.

I think my animals would all go on strike if I took away their Canidae and Felinedae. The Canidae is pretty high on the list, and is very affordable.

I have just started eating Canidae. It is mixed half and half with my old food. The Candiae is dark kibbles. I was leaving all the dark kibbles from my Blue on the carpet. I would not eat them. Now, mommy can not tell if I am leaving all the dark kibble or just the one from Blue. She can not see the difference in the dark ones. She is going to try me tonight on just some Canidae and see if I eat that. She should have done that before, she mixed them.

Loki and Remus really liked the Royal Canin Special, but I had to switch them to Canidae Lamb & Rice because of Loki's alergies. I tried to swith the cats to felidae, but they refuse to give up their Royal Canin. I suppliment that with Innova EVO can food.

Royal Canin is about a 2 star food on their list. I agree with comments on Canidae. Great food.

Thanks everyone! We did switch to Canidae all life stages and he seems to like it. Now the 2nd question is - we have a ton of his old kibble left. Does anyone know if a shelter/IHS would take it? it is not in its bag anymore (we have a big tupperware container we keep it in). We could continue to feed 1/2 and 1/2 till it is gone, but I'd prefer to donate it if there is a facility that would take it.
