Bordatella Vaccinations

Sarah on Health - Wed, March 19 2008

I just discovered that bordatella vaccinations only last six months. Did you know that? My dogs get them at their annual exams. Never once has my vet, or any vet I've ever been to, told me it does not last a year.

My boyfriend just took his Boxer to day care and they said he had to go get vaccinated again because he was past the six-month time frame. He was just as surprised as me.

I wish the bordatella wasn't a required vaccine for boarding and daycare. It's such a nuisance and fairly pointless!

I just saw for the first time this year that it was a vaccine that only last six months. One article I read said not to even give it unless you knew your dog was going to be kenneled because it lasted only a few months, so you might as well only do it right before a kennel visit.

I am glad I saw this. I am going to a kennel for the first time in my life. I will get the spay up my nose about two weeks before I have to go there. I am sooo scared. I have never been away from mommy.

Very interesting... I have been a little confused b/c my previous vet did it every six months, my new vet was confused by the six month thing on Carolina's vaccination records. And we are about to take a trip, so that means we will need to board her. Jeez, makes me want to find a new vet.

Our vet sends out a 6 month reminder for bordatella. I never used to have my dogs get it until we started going to the bark park. I don't know after our last experience if we'll go back, so I don't really care to update them. We don't board them, either.

This is exactly what my vet says...

This is news to me! And I agree with it being fairly pointless because kennel cough is something dogs can recover from with no treatment at all. It's just really a problem in puppies and immunocompromised dogs from what I understand.

Amen to that! I vaccinated my dogs only because of the requirement. My vet does not advocate this vaccine at all. Wish we could convince the daycares & boarding facilities.

Yeah we have to get ours every six months to go to daycare. It's not that bad we get the vaccination there at the daycare and then get lots of cookies!

I agree...pointless vaccine. We've got ours so we can go to the bark park, but that's really the only reason because as Mamma Muttblood said, dogs recover from it just like humans recover from a cough, unless they are super young or immunocompromised. My vet doesn't require it, just the bark parks and kennels. So, if you don't go there, I wouldn't worry about it until you need it (although I've heard efficacy isn't for at least 2 weeks even if you give the vacccines...so giving it right beforehand is almost pointless).
