Why do I bite when I get pet?

Seth on Behavior - Wed, March 19 2008

Look at my picture. I am just as cute as a piece of pumpkin pie, but I turn into a devil cat when people try to pet me! Like Mom's boyfriend. I walk up to him and act all cute and start purring...

...so he starts petting me and then I bite him. Maybe I am just playing, I'm not really sure but why do I do that? I want to be pet, but people aren't going to do it if I bite them. How can I stop?!

Seth, you probably don't want to hear this, but people need to walk away from you (not just stop petting you - actually leave you) when you get mean. You look to be an intelligent kitty, and you'll figure out that you shouldn't bite.

I do the same thing! But when I bite it's not "I'm gonna take your hand off" kinda bite it's a soft bite. Mom thinks that must be something that kitten do to their FurMoms. If you find anything out please pass it along. Purs, Jordan

My parents' cat does this too. They just call it love bites. He is a very independent, sassy kitty who only likes the be pet on his own terms. And then he makes you feel like you're doing it wrong! Haha. You just have an attitude. Maybe you're not into snuggles and stuff.

I love bite, especially my dad. Shhh, don't tell mom, but he's my favorite! He gives me the best scratches and sometimes I just give him a little love bite as a token of thanks. If you're biting hard and making people bleed, that's bad... not nice.

I used to bite. Note... USED to... Every time I bit my mom, she'd say "OW!" real loud and quit giving me any attention. She'd actually go over and give Charlie a LOT of attention while ignoring me. I learned quick that if I want to be petted and scritched that I couldn't bite. So I stopped and get lots more attention now.

When I get rubbed on my chin I am happy, but if you try and pet my back or my tummy, then watch out because I will get you in the Edgar Death Grip.

FE-Lions are easy to over stimulate. HUH? Did I say that. I know the two I live with her are that way. They tease me and want to play and it turns into a real fight. They start it.
