A human swimmer friend of mine used to get swimmer's ear and his granny told him to use 50/50 vinegar and water. It helped. He did some online searches and found the same advice. One site did advise to add a small amount of alcohol to the mix to help dry out the ear. The vinegar is supposed to restore the ph and reduce inflammation. The water just dilutes the acidity of the vinegar. Our old Lab used to have frequent ear issues and we used to go through that blue ear wash from the vets...wish we had known about the vinegar solution.
I know a swimmer that uses alcohol to dry the ears. Be careful though. If there is any inflamation, don't use it. Your dog will be bouncing off the walls. I think this is more preventative. Mommy has also used peroxide. Good luck. Once they are healed, I think the alcohol is a good thing to use often.
Being a Cocker, I can vouch for a great ear cleaner with the following ingredients:
White vinegar,
Powdered boric acid,
Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol),
Betadine antiseptic (or generic equivalent).
Mom uses it on us weekly, and the vet says we have the cleanest ears he has ever seen. Follow the link for all the details:
rachel, bloodhound people swear by this....http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/BLUE.HTM
....i've not used this myself, but i know many who have, and say it works! just use it someplace where it won't stain anything, like outdoors, when she shakes her head. most people will use it outdoors. :)
Hi Rachel, I breifly fostered a puggle about two years ago and he had chronic yeast infections in both ears. Our vet said that those are the hardest to get rid of and gave us antibiotics. After the infection was cleared up he told me to use 50/50 water vinegar solution once a week in each ear and to feed him plain yogurt daily. Those steps were cheap and did the trick. Goodluck, Lynn
