Cancer?

Rachael on Health - Sat, March 15 2008

As I mentioned before, Wiggles went in for his senior exam last week. Age has finally caught up with Wiggles. He'll be 12 next month, and has started to slow down. We'd noticed some gradual weight loss during the last 6 months, which concerned us. When he was weighed, he'd lost 10 pounds (he's down to 42 pounds now)! Needless to say, I was mortified by that number. He doesn't look like he's lost that much, but the scale doesn't lie.

We had blood work done, to cover all bases. Of course, it was completely normal. That ruled out kidney/liver dysfunction. He hasn't got heartworms. My vet suggested whipworms, because we do take the dogs off of that medicine through the winter (I like to avoid as many chemicals as possible). So, we did a fecal test, which came back clear. All the boys are back on Advantage Multi, which kills and prvents worms.

I don't think it's worms, however. Miles is an avid poop eater. We are putting our best efforts into curbing this behavior, but so far, all of our attempts have failed. I don't see how Miles could avoid a case of worms for months if Wiggles had them.

I've begun to worry about some form of cancer. Wiggles is going back in this coming week for full body x-rays and opinion from the other vet who works for my vet. What spurred this decision was a quote I read from a vet's website, who answers questions from others. He said, "In fact, when a dog obviously has a serious problem and I can't find a cause and blood work is normal I really start to think about cancer as a possibility." Those were very disheartening words for me to read.

I was wondering if you all make the same conclusions I do. His only symptoms are weight loss (no decreased appetite, or increased energy level), a bit more stiffness in his back end (for which he receives glucosamine/chondroitin), and some straining when defecating. I can't think of anything else that fits, and I'm trying to prepare myself for the worst.

It is tough to see our four-legged friends begin the downward slope that comes with old age. While it may be unpleasant, you are right to be concerned and consider all the possibilities. The best advice is to expect the worst and hope for the best. Maybe you should take this time to prepare for how you would deal with that situation, and weigh your options. Just remember, you're being the best mommy you can be and you will make the right decision for your baby in the end. :) Bless you and yours.

Did they check him for a low thyroid and diabetes? Those are the two that come to mind with an unexplained weight loss. I hope it turns out well for him. I tend to look up symptoms and get myself in a tizzy when the dogs don't feel good. Let us know what the vet finds. You're in our thoughts and prayers

I know in people a lot of times their appetites just slow down as their metabolism slows down. Have his eating habits changed at all in the past year? He may have just started eating less in such small increments that you didn't notice. You are such a good mom to Wiggles, and I know you are justifiably anxious. Just know we are all there with you and hoping he's just slowing down in his "golden" years.

My Molly had weight loss, was stiff in her hind end, had trouble getting up by herself and strained while going to the bathroom also. It was just old age. We hope there is no cancer whatsoever. We will send many prayers for Wiggles.

His diet has been exactly the same for over a year. He has been on different foods, but caloric intake in always the same, and he eats every bite in his bowl. He won't leave anything for the other two to get (typical Basset). I want to chalk everything up to old age as well, but we're going to cover our bases first.

That is very smart to cover all the bases. Molly never lost her appetite, maybe the last week or so, that's it. She was a very food motivated baby girl.

rachael, didn't you say they did bloodwork on him? if they did, the red and white blood cell count would have been seen, and if there was anything wrong (leading them to think of cancer) then my guess would be that either, or both would be off. with stuart, his white AND red blood cell count were low. we still really don't know what was exactly wrong with him, but there were cancer cells present in the extensive tests that were done there at the end of his life. the only thing about having him x-rayed is that you would have to sedate him, and i'd be more worried of sedating an animal of that age, than the chance of cancer being there, with normal blood panels. (does that make any sense? LOL)have you had his teeth checked? if he has any dental issues,(even a cracked tooth can cause eating problems) it could be that is why he's not been eating as much. i hope everything goes alright! :)
