Pit Bulls in the news

Czar on My Blog - Thu, June 07 2007

Has anyone else noticed that when a pit bull is responsible for and attack on a person the headline reads something like this "PITBULL brutally attacks person." Yes I am a pit bull and I know that these things happen but think about this. All of the other attacks in the news recently that haven't involved pit bulls simply says. "Dog attacks Child." Yes usually in the story it tries to identify the breed. But why does any other Pit Bull attack have to be different. It is this that puts fear into people about our breed. Noone should be attacked by a dog. It is sad. But this is discrimination in itself. You don't read the paper to find "Local White Man Kills Neighbor." Why does this have to happen to us pit bulls. Not all of us are bad. I just want people to know this. Mommy was so upset she actually sent an email to the indy star about this issue. I don't think anything will get done though. Mommy says they use this as a tactic to draw more people in to read the news. I am just so sad. There have been so many attacks recently and I just want to give kisses to all of those affected but they would probably be terrified of me because of my breed. Sigh. We do not want to fight. People make us fight. People hurt and kills us more than we hurt people, this much is true, look it up. It doesnt help that people like Micheal Vick who is supposed to be an icon or hero to so many get busted with over a dozen pit bulls and fighting equipment and mommy says nothing will happen to him because he is famous. People are hurting and even killing my buddies and for what. Money. Mommy says money makes the world go round. Grrrr. When will we be accepted again like we were in the time of Teddy Roosevelt and the first world war. We were once a national symbol of courage and pride. Now it seems that what most people see in us is a monster. It makes me so sad. Not to mention how many time do we catch the heat for a misidentified breed of dog. How many of you can find my pit bull buddy out of this list. http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html
Give it a try you may be surprised.
Mommy tells me to hold my head up she is still very proud of me and loves me. To my other buddies who have also been discriminated against, we are here for you.

I totally agree with you, it is unfair and discrimative. I am so disappointed when I see negative news stories about not only pit bulls but also rotties, dobies and german shepards. It's not the animals fault they were treated so badly they had to lash out distructively. I feel sorry for the victims of these attacks but the owners should be severly punished not the animals.

Wow, that Kirby mom is a flirt, isn't she??? LOL but really, i think all pit bull owners need to realize that the 'press' is against them. all of us, including my mommy, are scared of you only because of what we hear/read. help us understand the pit bull breed better!

Charlie-
That's the problem, people aren't educating themselves on the issues, and only using these stories as knowledge of the breed. These dogs don't come into this world choosing to fight to the death, or be a bait dog, to train a dog to fight to the death, it is PEOPLE who do this to them. As dog owners, I'm sure you're horrified and can't believe someone would do that, but that's how these dogs end up the way they are. They are bred and raised to fight, each other, or be used as "guard dogs" in poor neighborhoods, and since they were raised that way, they will attack someone coming into a yard, person, animal, it doesn't matter. But just think about it, if you've ever had a puppy, or a child, you know that they are happy and carefree and innocent, until WE screw them up. No puppy is mean and wants to hurt humans or other animals, it is conditioned and raised that way, by being abused itself, or forced to fight for its basic needs, food, water, shelter.

My boyfriend and I recently adopted Spike, and had met with probably 6-7 other dogs, all Pits, because we truly felt for this breed, and the way they are misunderstood and almost always immediately put to sleep once they enter a shelter, simply because of their breed. There are wonderful people out there luckily, who go around and rescue these dogs and bring them to foster homes. We wish we could have taken every one of the dogs that we met with, but we wanted to be smart about it, and knew that financially and logistically at this point, we could only handle one dog (we have 3 cats also).
Here are some very interesting articles, and a few on other breeds, such as Rotts. Please, take the time to read these, atleast a few of them, because ignorance and discrimination are the reasons for articles you see in the paper, and the fear of this breed. Sorry for the long post, but I hope more people who might feel the same as you read this and can get something out of it.
