OT-my Dad

The poor guy is still in the hospital. His doctor just called and said that he has a really nasty infection. He got it from the catheter that they used in the ER last week when they needed to get urine. That's what's so frustrating! If they had taken the time to try to do it naturally, he wouldn't be this sick. They were able to do it without a catheter this time in the hospital but I think they didn't want to take the time to help him get the specimen in the ER. And they had a student who needed to do a male patient, so I think that was part of it too. So now he has a raging awful infection that is really only treated with Penicillin that he can't take because he's allergic to it. So they're going to try the next best kind but he'll have to stay in the hospital at least through the weekend for the IV antibiotics. Dr said if he took the pills, it would be $1500 for a ten day supply!!!!! So the plan is to keep him at least through the weekend, if he feels better then he can go home on Monday but will have to return to the hospital daily for the IV antibiotics. I'm just feeling really frustrated and down today. I know he felt so bad yesterday because the infection has settled in one of his testicles and it's all swollen and painful. Being a woman I can't truly appreciate that but my hubby was making all kinds of faces. Luckily I have PTO time at work so I'm getting paid even thogh I'm not working. I don't like to leave him alone because he won't tell the nurses if he has a problem or needs something(you know how older people don't want to bother the staff-Hello, it's their job!) I'm not sure what I'm going to do if he has to go to the hospital every day for the antibiotics. I called Jerry and he can work from home so he said he would alert them that he might need to do that. I've got several siblings that live in town but most of them work and can't just not go to work like me. Please keep Pop in your prayers. I'm off to see him and maybe try to run by work for a few minutes. Thanks!

That sounds awful! I feel so bad for the poor guy and for you trying to deal with all this. I'll be praying for him to get better.

We'll be praying too. Here's hoping that things clear up and life gets back to whatever is normal for you all.

I'm so sorry all of you are having to go through this, especially your poor dad! Ask the MD if he can have a PIC line put in and you can run his ATB for him at home. That's what I did after developing a nasty infection while in the hospital. The only reason they wanted me to stay after 10 days was to do the IV infusion, and I wasn't having that, so they put in a pic line and I ran them through myself twice a day. It's pretty easy to do, and your dad would be so much happier out of the hospital.

I'm so sorry he has to go through this. Poor guy. We'll definitely keep him in our prayers. I knew a lady who did this PIC line thing becuase of an infection. She was able to be at home and comfortable through her infection. Worth asking the doc about.

That does sound bad, M. We are sorry that all of you have to go through all of this mess. Nothing worse than frustrations on top of not feeling good. You will be in our thoughts this weekend.

Sounds like he needs a homecare nurse! Unfortunately my caseload is mostly in Madison county. Sounds like he could be an infusion patient to me...of course Medicare only pays for the actual medication in the powder form in the vial. He'd have to have seconday insurance to pay for the saline that reconstitutes the medication and the supplies used to do the infusion. Unless he has Medicare D, which I've heard is somewhat obscure. Anyway, I hope everything at your place starts to settle down soon. You've had a lot of hospital drama of the human and canine variety lately.

I am so glad I do a form of nursing that does not require me to know all this regulatory stuff about payors!
