My vet visit--22.5lbs!!

Rusty on Nutrition - Thu, March 06 2008

As some of you know, I'm pretty much a lazy slug...always have been. Mom adopted me at around 2 years of age from Tails a Waggin Rescue about 6 years ago. I was big then...and lazy.

Anyway, Dr. Ward said that I'm too fat and need to diet otherwise I'm headed straight for diabetes in a few years. Now, another vet told mom this years and years ago--large male orange cats have a higher suseptiblity to feline diabetes. Don't know if that's still accurate info.

Anyway, I weigh 22.5lbs!! Don't forget, a "fit" me would be 16-18lbs..I'm a big boy naturally! I eat Eagle Pack Fish formula. I've been on ProPlan low fat as well as some other low fat foods and never really lost any weight. Dr. Short tested my thyroid for the chance of having any hypothyroid issues (very rare in cats) and of course I'm totally normal. My ears have also flared up with yeast in the last few months, cysts from inflammation, and I'm just very "sebaceousy" (oily and I have blackheads...gross, I know).

Dr. Ward said "canned food only diet" for two years to slowly slim down, but mom hates canned food. She asked about a grain free diet. So, we are currently making the switch to Wellness Core Grain Free formula to see if that helps my skin and to loose some weight, since the Scient Diet DM (for diabetes management) is grain free/low carb.

Anyone have their cats on grain free diets? How has their weight been? Anyone struggled with diabetes or these types of skin issues in their cats?

Hi Rusty, my weight is a bit high (the vet said I could stand to lose a few), but I am not as big boned as you. I would be interested to hear what the others have to say and what suggestions that they give to you. I enjoy being lazy as much as the next cat, but do you have scheduled playtime, too?

The grain-free diet really varies from cat to cat. Both Core and EVO are high fat compared to other foods... Our mom tried to switch us to grain free a while back and while Spokes and Alvin stayed at their weight, Cyrus and I really started to pack on the pounds in a short time. She now mixes EVO with Innova light and Wellness Indoor cat. Cyrus and I have returned to our previous weights, while Spokes and Alvin are STILL at their ideal weights (disgusting turds... eat all they want and not gain...).

Thanks guys...Um...I don't play. Sometimes I will bat at a shoe string, but for the most part, I do best at keeping the chairs warm and covered in fur. If I have to exert any kind of energy, I choose not to engage in that activity. I only "lay down" and play...forget running around or jumping...haha. Geez...I even just lounged around on the floor at the vets office...they thought I was another dog at first glance. About the Wellness Core: Mom says that she likes the Wellness Grain free the best because compared to the others, the fat content (not to mention, vitamin/mineral) is much lower/reasonalbe actually. That's why she chose it for the dogs (besides the fact that her dogs did so well on regular Wellness). She had her dogs on other grain free diets and they never had good stools and so far I'm tolerating the switch wonderfully she says! Mom says that she is *hoping* to lessen the amount I eat very slowly...however, I've already made it clear that if I can see the bottom of my bowl, her plants are in trouble. She was thinking that eventually, maybe she could give me a can in the morning and then dry when she gets home (or vice versa)...maybe that will help keep me from packing on extra weight...who knows though, right?? LOL--I don't really fluctuate that much at least...man, she just wishes that I would reliably eat a raw diet, but I won't...I'm a "dry food junkie."

I just checked to be certain Patches, and the Wellness Core actually has less fat than the Eagle Pack Fish and Anchovy formula. So that's a plus!! I definately let you know how it goes...if it helps his ears/skin, then awesome. Dr. Short suspects that he might have some sort of allergy, so this might help rule out anything. Any other tips you have Patches will be greatly appreciated.

Like I said, it varies from cat to cat! On another cat related site I visit, someone asked a similar question (her cat was overweight + diabetic) with the same answers--some of the cats lost weight, some gained a LOT of weight quickly, and others remained constant. As for fur/skin, mom's noticed a definite reduction in 'dandruff' and shedding, so that's a plus!

I am sure you should lose weight if that is what the vet advised, but you sure are a handsome devil. Maybe you are just big boned; that is what I keep telling Mama when she tries to cut back on my treats.
