Question about HSI

Nancy on My Blog - Mon, March 03 2008

I am sitting here thinking about the changes at HSI, and I got to thinking about our Cousin Posey, the Basset Hound. She got loose this Fall, and my nephew and his family had JUST moved here, so they didn't have tags for her and her microchip wasn't updated. Someone turned her into HSI, and they were reunited.

Am I understanding the proposed changes correctly? If that had happened to Posey now, would she have been refused at HSI and then taken to ACC? She is, obvioulsy, not a stray. She was wearing a harness and had a microchip (even though it had her previous address info on it), and she's in good health.

I'm just wondering what this new policy is. I am really having a problem with it, which is causing me not to want to volunteer there OR go to any of their events, which kind of stinks because I loved Mutt Strut last year.

Anybody know? Anybody from HSI on here that can enlighten me?

I don't know, but from what I read, I think your scenario is accurate. They will no longer take in any strays. Posey was technically a stray, so they wouldn't take her and rename her Petunia.

That is a very good question. Can one still take a stray dog there to be scanned for a microchip? They won't keep the stray there, but will they at least scan them and help the person who brought them in find the owner? I'm sure if you want to make a donation they would! I'm really upset with this new policy. I'm thinking about writing a letter or making a phone call, something. If enough people write letters and complain, do you think they will change it back? It's probably pointless.

Bed time, but I just heard an advertisement on Channel 6 about how they are doing a "big give" thing in conjunction with Oprah's show. I am going to check it out tomorrow (after school, of course, hee hee). Maybe there's something that can be done for ACC or FACE or other rescue groups, since they are going to bear the brunt of HSI's decision.

I was thinking that exact same thing! Winning the Big Whatever and donating the money to a rescue/animal organization.

I would hope they would still scan a pet that you brought in. Most places with scanners will do it. Personally, I have a lot of places much closer to me than HSI for scanning, so I wouldn't make the trip.
